have we ever gotten a transfer kid who we were second fiddle to.

ET comes to mind when he transferred, its like we werent even on the radar.
There any chance at all of CM transferring to illinois?

Yea but the difference is ET isn't from the area and took some backlash after it all. CM is from Chicago and has a lot of friends on the team.

I'm not thinking of any off the top of my head, who are you referring to?

Ryan Blackwell, we narrowly beat Syracuse for his services, mainly due to his connection with the coaching staff (Lou and Jimmy) when he was a ballboy for the Illini, but decided to transfer back east to Syracuse (where his family had subsequently moved) when Lou-Jimmy left. Syracuse has finished a close second in the original recruitment.

Also, Brett Robisch transferred to Oklahoma State. Coach Sutton had recruited Robisch out of HS and had maintained a close relationship with the family and his father Dave (ex-Kansas great).

Wes Lunt?

In football, yes. Wes Lunt committed to Oklahoma State because Reilly O'Toole had committed to the Illini IIRC. I'd imagine there are more examples in football, we had also recruited Jeff George out of HS, but do not remember if we had finished second or further back in his original recruitment.

Cool thanks for the info! These are a bit before my following so it's nice to learn.

Did he ever see the court at UK?

He was actually 1 of only 4 Kentucky players who played in every game. But his playing time really dropped after the non-con part of the schedule.

Part of the B1G AD's meeting was about the 'epidemic' of transfers.

"It's a vicious cycle," Northwestern coach Chris Collins said. "Where we're headed is ultimately free agency, and that's not a good thing."
ESPN's current transfer list is swelling toward 1,000 players seeking new schools, and it includes dozens of graduate transfers.
Collins says NCAA data shows that fewer than 25 percent of graduate transfers go on to finish their master's degrees, which is ostensibly why the rule was first put into place.

On the bright side, Illinois is doing well in making sure that players are actually getting their masters.

I feel bad for Charles Matthews. Cal sold him on being a big part of the team, then recruited over him, then Creaned him.

Yeah, from what someone around here told me, CM was pushed out or at the very least strongly encouraged to transfer. While I do feel a bit bad for CM, this really shouldn't be a surprise to him.

I think everyone but the Matthews saw this coming, feel bad for the kid but hopefully he and others learn from it.

That is the chance you take when you jump on board with a scumbag. Hard to feel sorry for someone that had so many other options and chose that one. He will recover just fine and probably be a better player because of it.

Should people learn from it? Yes. Will they? No. Because at the end of the day these kids and their family cannot be objective. They think that their kid is good enough to make it, even when everyone and everything else seems to say maybe not. That level of emotional involvement really skews a lot of judgement-making processes and leads to people making these decisions, that to those of us who can be more objective, look stupid.

That objectivity is severely clouded though when looking at things through O&B (or other rival) glasses. Similar to Matthews, the vast majority of those "objective" fans thought Ulis will not play much and be recruited over. Now he is a first round NBA draft pick. He clearly made the right choice.

Eventually, it comes down to ability to play at the level you were recruited for (whatever that level is). Some will make it, some will not, same as in many schools. If they can't, players will transfer. Not different than transfers we had (e.g., Colbert, Legion, and many others). It is hardly a UK problem.

You are right on the money. Definitely not something that only happens at UK, however the UK example is interesting in that guys who are VERY talented can still end up not making the cut, which really speaks to the level of players they are bringing in every year.

Absolutely, that is why I said at the "level they were recruited." Kentucky recruits at a high level, so coming in players know the level of competition. It is not that they have a "sure thing" from Cal, the same way that players coming in at UI do not have a "sure thing" either. Some will make it, some will not.

To piggyback off of Obelix, how many of us who frequent this board are capable of complete objectivity? Personally, I know I'm not. At the end of the day the kid wanted to play for UK - a pretty popular opinion. It didn't work out for him, but I'm not sure there's anything to "learn from" for other recruits. Situations change, even at the so-called "stable" schools with coaches who aren't known for the player turnover Cal is.

He was a MCAA, but I'm not sure we need his style of game. I think he is another WF type, not a PG or great shooter.

In his current year group we have JCL, Jordan, and Kipper that appear to play that position. In the following year, we already have D Williams, Pickett, and are recruiting Lewis and Goodwin.

I haven't seen Matthews much on video, I know he is a very good athlete. If he can be a 6-4 PG type than I'll gladly take him.
