Some teams might not face off with each other for a year or more . . . .

They should make sure to have protected rivalry games play twice each season(ex: ILL should always play Northwestern, Iowa, and Wisconsin twice or sub in Indiana for Wisconsin)

Wait, where was this in the statement. 18 teams, 20 games. Sounds like you play every team once and 3 teams twice.
Guessing it’s what you’re saying else it wouldn’t be fair. Though technically Italy is right. Teams may not play each other for a CALENDAR year or more.

I forgot how much this will suck for basketball now too. I didn't hate football until Washington and Oregon also came.

personally, I'm excited for it. All four new additions are major national brands. I will be infinitely more interested in a IL-UCLA or IL-Oregon matchup in basketball and IL-USC or IL-UW in football than Rutgers or Maryland in either

Change happens. It will be interesting to see how they split it up if they do 3 protected rivalries on top of playing everyone.

What I don't get is why isn't the big ten tourney 16 teams... Why 15? I don't think it matters to give the 1 seed a bye

I wouldn't have minded if they changed it to 17 games and every team just plays every other team once. It's probably the fairest way to crown a champion despite the home/away scheduling discrepancies. That being said-- and it's ironic to say this after the Thursday loss-- but it probably helps us overall if we end up getting some kind of protected rivalry situation with Northwestern, Indiana, and Iowa.

Also, every team should be in the Big Ten Tournament... the worst team should still have a sliver of a chance to make the NCAA tournament, as unlikely as it might be.

I think they should drop the BIG tourney altogether and just play regular season schedule of playing each other twice.
Totally agree. Why do we punish ourselves by having to play multiple hard fought games in a very short period, right before the tournament that REALLY matters. Add a couple of conference games and finish up early like almost everyone else.

As for basketball, yes, the UCLA/Oregon/USC games should present new and interesting matchups. USC is having a down year but have been a solid team under Enfield for multiple yrs now

Maybe they should start relegation. The bottom 3 teams not only miss the B1G Tourney, but also have to go play in the MVC the next year. The Missouri Valley sends up their top 3.
Why would relegation even be on the table as an option? That would not fit into the money aspect of B10 expansion. What is the Big 10 going to do with Drake, Indiana St, and SIU or Bradley? That makes no sense.

I hate this so, so, so much regarding the tournament. It makes no sense to give the teams at the bottom of the conference nothing to play for.

They could always make the bottom few teams play a potential 6 games to win the tournament and have it start on Tuesday rather than Wednesday. Maybe they don't see the point of it. I don't think it matters that much tbh. No bottom tier team would win 6 games in 6 days to miraculously make a tournament appearance

Lowest seed ever to win was an 8 seed and only one 6 seed. That's probably all the info the B1G needed to make this decision.
