hard to complain with those rivals. they could have made us play the illini-buck every year.
Well we are for the first two years.

Besides our protected rivals, we see tOSU on both 24/25.

No other team doubles up besides NW/PU.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: looks like they are a “2 play” opponent.

yeah would have been nice to avoid them for the first 2 years while trying to gain momentum under BB, but at least we're not locked into them annually. hopefully our next 2 play will be Rutgers or Indiana

Well this year will be our last chance to make the B1G championship game for quite a while, until OSU or Michigan have a bad year in the next decade, which seems unlikely.

Illinois Football 2024 & 2025 Big Ten Opponents

2024
Home: Michigan, Iowa, Purdue, Maryland
Away: Ohio State, USC, Michigan State, Northwestern, Rutgers

2025
Home: Ohio State, UCLA, Indiana, Minnesota, Northwestern
Away: Penn State, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Purdue

So Iowa has 3 protected rivalries and PSU has 0? Only a career administrator could come up with that list and think it's a reasonable way to start building an equitable schedule for a league.

The 2024 schedule isn't the most favorable though USC is a lot closer to Penn State than Michigan and Ohio State, I was not impressed by them at all. However playing the conference's 4 (maybe 5 and 6) toughest teams still ain't going to be fun.

BTW got so dude r/CFB called Lincoln Riley by the name Benedict Brisket, we should adopt that.

Hoo boy, 2024 is an absolute beating. That could legitimately be a max 4-5 win season. Definitely need to make the most of this coming year's schedule. That said, we've dodged scheduling hardships for years being out West. It's just unfortunate that as soon as we start building some momentum and seeing a light at the end of the tunnel the B10 changes reality to be a freight train coming right at us.

I think, way way way before my time (and I’m a Class of ‘82 alum), Illinois and Ohio State were big rivals in football. I’m wondering if the administrators were trying to “hearken back” to those days, when they decided to make OSU our two-play opponent?

I love the way this broke for us. Playing Ohio state both years is tough, but there’s going to be tough teams on our schedule every year, that’s our new reality. We will get a break from them next time.

Purdue and Northwestern is huge for us. We can establish the upper hand in those rivalries and have it work out well for more years than not. I am thrilled on that front.

I know everyone is bemoaning the 2024 schedule. It is going to be TOUGH. But 4/5 wins max? Come on… We go bowling if we go 3-0 in non-con when that includes Kansas at home, we go 2-0 against Northwestern and Rutgers (yes, we can do that), and win one home game out of Purdue or Maryland. Altmeyer will be in his second year in the system. We can definitely pull that off, especially if we keep the momentum going with another bowl this year.

And then 2025, dream big.

Also with the past few schedule shakeups, we haven't played them in what feels like forever

Portal will be big. I'm not sure the younger DL will be ready for 2024/25 seasons. After "The Firm" departs - getting 1 if not 2 light-em up DL will be critical. Don't be too heartbroken if Illinois has a smaller 2024 HS class to chase a few extra portal players. Illinois should be a desirable destination.

I may regret this feeling later but....

I LOVE this new system.

Yep. We lose out by not being in a winnable west division. But that was going to change expansion or not. Divisions were going by the wayside one way or the other. I do mourn the end of the Big Ten West.

But as a consolation prize we are going to have amazing football to watch. I can’t wait.
