Big Ten Tournament Canceled

#51
Can we at least announce who made the NCAA tournament, so we can officially say the draught is over?
I'd bet the tournament gets cancelled. The field wont get announced. There's too much chaos and delaying it two months causes too many ripples (and thats assuming were out of this madness in 8 weeks). But the Guinness draught will continue to flow, if I misunderstood your question.

So, best case is the Committee announces a field of 68 and the Tournament is held in May or June, possibly even with fans? Sounds highly unlikely, but I am specifically identifying a best case. NCAA Tournament would actually be awesome in the summer, lol ... but as others have said, this is likely to get worse before it gets better. :(

I just want them to announce a field at the least ... hang a banner, screw it!

At minimum, NCAA needs to allow EA sports to release video game right now that will let us all play out the tournament in our homes.

It is so odd to see the Big East still playing right now.

While I also would like to see them still announce the field to see Illinois pop up on the screen, Andy Katz was saying many of the committee members who do that hadn't even started working on the field like they normally would have because they also are ADs, commissioners, etc. and have been dealing with all of this. So I'm not sure of the logistics of those guys even sitting down to make the brackets. I hope they do but think like most everything, that's up in the air at this point

Public schools are still operating but 25 basketball players can't play basketball? This is an airpborne proximity disease, its about large crowds gathering. These games could go on. America has gone from a pathetic response and underselling of the severity to hysteria. I am willing to bet within two weeks everything will be shut down ala Italy.

Schools are closing and going to quarintine when they find cases. For districts without cases, they don't want to close because for a segment of their students, they're the only two sure meals they get a day. Also, normality helps people keep it together and panic less. It also helps that spring break is coming up; there's a built-in social distancing period that schools are hoping will be enough so things aren't too disrupted.

If this is the end of it, I really feel for Kip, AF, and Ayo if he moves on. Not being able to say they played in the tournament will stick with them forever.

I ended my college baseball career waiting to play in our conference tournament championship game when the rain washed everything out. We had won the conference title in the regular season but had to come through the loser bracket in our tournament. Conference rules gave the automatic bid to the team that hadn't lost yet in the tourney. At large bid to continue on never came. 15 years later ending my college experience like that, and having the "what if" still haunts me.

All the other conference tournaments are also getting canceled now. Chances of the NCAA tournament surviving just dropped significantly.

Let's just nominate Katz to make up the bracket...even let him fill it out & name the champion. Giorgi can be his advisor.

The Rudy Gobert situation made this truly hit home for all sports organizations. If an NBA player, in a league with ultimate controls in place, can get hit with this....anyone can. If it turns out that this did spread to another player, where does it end?

Donovan Mitchell, also of the Jazz, apparently tested positive this morning. Yesterday, he was working out with a local high school team, and today that team is traveling to a state tournament game.

groups so small as an empty arena with players and media are not considered an issue right now

This is true on its face, but think of what the tournament actually is: almost a month of college basketball programs traveling around the country. Even if the arenas are sparsely crowded, what are they doing in a city that isn't home? Going to restaurants, staying in hotels, etc. If they planned to go back to campus in the interim, many are shifting to online only or are straight up closing for the time being.

This is all leading to the central issue of what would happen if a player or coach was diagnosed - the answer to which is that the team would be quarantined, unable to participate, and the fairness and integrity of the tournament itself would be called into question. That's not some crazy scenario, I would argue that is probably an even-odds outcome right now. Canceling the tournament midway through after jeopardizing student athletes is a pretty bad result for the NCAA.

not here, spring break is two days around easter.

groups so small as an empty arena with players and media are not considered an issue right now. But that being said, we are entering the unknown people are freaking out, I get it just don't fully agree with it.

Private schools do that around here, too.

The symptoms don't scare me, but what makes me nervous is the idea that I could pass it on to someone else. When you have people criss crossing the country, you have to do what you can to keep it contained. It might not be much, but limiting public gatherings seems to be one of the main focuses.

Whoa! That's the first I've heard of it. Reinforces the decision.

Alright so to the people who believe this is an overreaction. The idea is to reduce the speed of the spread so that our healthcare system can actually treat the patients that need it. If you allow the virus to spread unimpeded it will inarguably lead to triaging (aka deciding which patients live and die which Italy is already having to do). #FlattenTheCurve

Yep, my dad is an executive in healthcare administration. I started to take this a LOT more seriously after talking to him last night. My girlfriend is also an ICU nurse. From what I’ve gathered, this isn’t a huge deal for you as an INDIVIDUAL, as far as your health and safety go ... it is a VERY big deal - a lot bigger than people realize - for society. This has led to a very strange combination of overreacting by individuals looking out for themselves AND not appreciating the severity of the situation society faces.
