I remember well when Collinsville and Bogie Redmon defeated Rockford East and Skip Thoren on Friday in the Illinois state basketball tournament. Big disappointment as an 8th grade Erab fan. Bogie went on to play with Skip at Illinois. Saw them play at Chicago stadium with UCLA, Loyola and Cincinnati I believe.

I grew up 2 blocks from Bogie, 2 years younger and 2 feet shorter. My first memory of Bogie was when he was about 11, after a heavy rainfall, riding his bicycle thru the yards leaving big ruts. If he wasn't so likeable the little old ladies would have killed him.

During practice in 61, I remember Bogie abusing people and Bert Weber then the assistant coach stopping practice to say "That is what a center should look like, 6'5" 218 lbs and 6 ounces of body fat.

Saw him last March before covid shut everything down, except for the 2 canes, he looked like he could still play.

Thoren, Downey, Brody = some big names in Illini basketball history. Bogie played on a really good team.

And to think that football was equally good with Butkus and Nitschke at the time. How often have we simultaneously been at the top of the conference in both major sports? (1984 I guess.)

Lost a true friend and a real gentleman. He was a lot more than just a basketball player! When my oldest daughter was playing college volleyball he once set up a special night to honor her at her game.

My mom is an Erab, class of ‘58 I think. My uncle played on their runner-up state championship team in ‘48-49.

Sorry to hear this news. The 1961 Kahoks were a great undefeated champion. He and Fred Riddle were the stars. They breezed through the IHSA tournament and if my geezer memory is correct they only had one close game with Centralia.

A year behind Bogie, but IIRC a starter on that B1G title team of '63, was another all-time Illini great....Don Freeman of Madison.

2001 (my junior year) was a pretty good one.

RIP to Bogie, one of my first heroes of Illini basketball. I began following them in the 64-65 season and what a fun team it was to watch! I'm attaching a link for those interested so you can check out the roster, results from that year, etc. A couple of notes for the younger fans who may never heard of Bogie and some of the other guys on those mid-60's teams. #1. Notice that there aren't any freshman listed; that's because freshmen were ineligible to play back then. #2. Look at some of the point totals they put up, especially during the conference part of the season, AND, without the benefit of the 3-point shot! #3. Also back then only the conference champion from each conference was a part of the NCAA Tournament, so this team didn't make it. But still, what a great team it was.

Beat Litchfield in overtime; that was the first game without Bogie who had broken a bone in his foot in practice the day before. Beat Litchfield in the SS by 40 after Bogie returned.

After cleared to start walking on the foot, he walked from his house to the HS and back each day to strengthen the foot. About 6 miles round trip.

I was 6 years old when that team played and though I would have watched the games with my father I can't remember much about players. I do see Preston Pearson on that roster. Though I hated the Cowboys, I always thought it was cool that he had played for UI before somehow becoming a professional football player. I was never quite sure how a basketball player could get drafted in the NFL.

Terrific HS football player but didn’t play in college as he said he got headaches. Could jump out of the gym, great athlete and fan favorite when he blocked a shot by Bill Buntin (think it was him). Wasn’t much of a shooter.

Met him when I was 10 years old. Got his autograph and he was nice to a little kid like me.

Seeing a picture of Bogie in the game against Kentucky that they won in December 1964 brought back memories of me at age 9 sitting on the steps of my house in Decatur listening to the game on my tiny radio. Probably couldn't get a good signal anywhere else.
