There is no such thing as losing to get a lesser bowl opponent anyway. If we lose out, worst scenario is the Music City Bowl against LSU. Not that it matters, because being able to say you played in the Reliaquest and then Citrus within a few years is a great thing. No one cares about the score, just the prestige of your program.

Citrus bowl is actually the most likely scenario with 1 more win and Indiana making CFP. Iowa won’t go there due playing last year.
The only thing standing in the way of that being 100% true is ourselves. With the way it's looking above us in the conference, the Citrus Bowl bid is ours to lose right now. Anything less and we're going to be nervous as hell watching the bowl selection show come 12/8. Not to mention how much a screwed-over Indiana would throw a wrench in things.

I understand that it’s Illinois Football, but OMG, the angst over a projected bowl game is laughable. Competition is always the best for competitors. BB is the ultimate competitor, and D1 athletes do not have the same fears that our fragile fans do. Please win out and get us into the biggest bowl game, against the best team, and let the cards fall where they may!

Actually, all indications are that people who vote in polls care. There are plenty of examples of teams dropping out of the top 25 after losing a "meaningless " bowl game.

I do not want to see us hammered by a team like Tennessee in a bowl game. Far better to be competitive on a nationsl stage.

I don’t want to see what happened to Florida State hsppen to us. Maybe that’s just PTSD related to Illinois football, but I want a bowl game that we have a realistic chance to win.
I know a ton of people have responded already to the first part of this so I'll just leave that.

But I think you fundamentally misunderstand what happened to FSU. Getting blown out to Georgia did not cause the season they're having. They lost 10 players to the draft, and it turns out the guys they had waiting to step in weren't that great. Then they made the disastrous decision to pin their hopes on DJ Uiagalelei at QB. Losing 10 NFL players and replacing them with scrubs, and transferring in one of college footballs all-time busts to lead your offense, is why FSU is having a catastrophic season.

Which is to say that if, like FSU, we take a step back after this season it'll be for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with the score of our bowl game.
