Bowl Projections

Another season win, another week of people so terrified of the thought of facing a good team in a bowl game that is completely meaningless to both our future and recruiting, that they'd almost rather us lose actually meaningful games to Rutgers and Northwestern to avoid that possibility. Truly remarkable stuff. Fans just so conditioned for failure they can't accept success due to all that comes with it.

It's both deeply sad and hilarious some people feel this way. Wait til they find out Bryant and Franklin on offense and Jacas and Coleman on defense won't be playing so they can protect their stock in a few weeks and talk ad nauseum about how their "selfishness" destroyed the team's future.

Can you imagine this argument in basketball? "If we're not a Top 3 seed, I hope we don't even make the tournament as we'll get embarrassed. Instead we'll compete in competitive NIT games." Just mind-blowing stuff
yup
you play your absolute best against the teams on your schedule and the rest of tut post season will take care of itself .

I’m thrilled we got to two Rose Bowls and a Sugar Bowl during my adult life and wouldn’t trade those losses for wins in the Weed Eater bowl

I do not want to see us hammered by a team like Tennessee in a bowl game. Far better to be competitive on a nationsl stage.

I don’t want to see what happened to Florida State hsppen to us. Maybe that’s just PTSD related to Illinois football, but I want a bowl game that we have a realistic chance to win.
I will never understand this way of thinking. I guarantee 95% of the guys on our team, including Bret and the staff, want to play the best team/biggest name we can in a bowl game.

I will say it again since apparently some people are having some reading comprehension issues on the weekend.

I NEVER SAID I WANTED ILLINOIS TO LOSE THE NEXT TWO REGULAR SEASON GAMES.

It's mind-blowing to me to think that I'd actually like to see Illinois with a matchup that has a reasonable chance of winning. The SEC will probably make that a moot point with a bunch of non-P2 conference teams playing their way out of the playoff mix, but come on. I want Illinois to win every game. I'd just like to see a bowl game match up on national TV that has a great chance to be competitive.

I fail to understand how people can take what I said as doom and gloom.

It’s a little more simple than people are making it.

1. I am a fan and want Illinois in the best possible bowl.
2. I like to watch Illinois win and not get their but kicked.

Both things can be true. I don’t want to shy away from competition, but it’s not enjoyable watching another team demolish us.

The Citrus Bowl isn’t going to take Iowa two years in a row so it’s going to come down to 3 teams. Illinois, Rutgers or Minnesota. Iowa is most likely going to the ReliaQuest or the Music City Bowl.

Minnesota will have 5 Ls after they play PSU.

If RU beats us and beats MSU, then I guess it's probably them (?)

And if we win out it's most definitely us.

Best teamnor biggest name? Please make up your mind.

I think it's much more complicated. I think bowls with history will have more allure for players. I also think they want to win. Yes, they're competitive but I'm not sure your take is entirely accurate either way you put it.

Speaking of reading comprehension, you responded to a post (mine) that said zero about you suggesting you wanted Illinois to lose games (despite your bolded all caps), so why the vitriol directed at me?

Wow, lots of anger from a couple folks on what bowl they want to go to. I like the Illini having this problem vs. how to recover from a 2-10 season. Why are you asking me to make up my mind? Best team, biggest name, best bowl … all of it! Why do I have to select best vs. biggest? (Isn’t that just semantics anyway?) I want the best and biggest in a bowl and I guarantee you the team does, too. Shine a light on Illinois; in 2024, we’re not afraid! Let’s go!!!!

Very unlikely for both scenarios.

Your second scenario very unlikely but even if it comes to fruition, both Minnesota and RU will have head to head wins against us.

Regarding recruits … imagine being able to tell them we’re playing in the effing Citrus Bowl against the 13th ranked team in the country from the SEC and before Bret got here, we got beat by Iowa 63-0 and in a couple short years, we were one foot fault (home loss to Minnesota) from being in the CFP. And look, Tennessee (previously ranked #7, losing only on the road at Georgia and Arkansas) beat us A Lot to A Little (let’s say, 40-10), but our receivers and some of our defense didn’t play (preparing for the NFL draft), so we put in Elzy, Dixon, Beatty, et al., and you saw some signs of talent from them and they got to play on NBC with 7 million people watching. Now, those guys are good and have promise, but we need some horses if we’re gonna take that next step and you, my bright-eyed bushy-tailed 18 year old, are exactly what we need to take that next step.

Alternatively, we win the flipping game and then we don’t need that 18 year old anymore, we’re going solely for 5 stars! 😆

LOL. Anger? I have none. But thanks for clarifying that you want the best and biggest bowl instead of the best team. Not sure why you're shying away from better teams, but so be it.
