I was just about to post this.

I feel that 8-4 is very achievable this year. Aren't these normally low 8-4 or 7-5 B1G bowls games?

Maybe one notch below. Last year, Minnesota was 7-5 heading into the Cactus bowl and Penn St was 6-6 headed into the Pinstripe bowl. The year before, Rutgers was 6-6 headed into the Cactus bowl and Nebraska was 6-6 headed into the Pinstripe bowl.

Traditionally (prior to CFP), yes. However, the CFP has greatly shifted the quality of the B1G teams fielding these bowl games. I am just happy to see Detroit no longer as a tie-in (at least what the link from Dan shows).

we need to win 9 games to play in a decent bowl . 7-5 or 8-4 relegates us to one of those tier 3 bowls

Was just looking at those B1G bowl tie-ins again, and over the last four seasons, the Illini have gone to the ReliaQuest Bowl, Citrus Bowl, and the Music City Bowl (so three of the major tie-ins against SEC teams and went 2-1!). All that is left is getting one of the coveted CFP spots. Coach B has really elevated the floor of the Illini program. This season is such a wild card with the roster turnover, so if the Illini ultimately end up in the Cactus Bowl (which is a step below the prior three bowl games), I will not consider it a complete disappointment. If that is the floor for the season, then I am all for it.

I'm still burning from getting beat by Alabama in the 1982 Liberty Bowl. Hardest hitting game I've ever attended. Their team was desperate to win Bryant's last game. Trudeau getting hammered by their pass rush. An inexperienced Jenner having to replace him (in obvious passing situations) and throwing 3 interceptions under a heavy rush. Incidentally, Bryant may be a coaching legend in Alabama, but he came across as an arrogant p***k in the combined coaches interview. Coach White was, as always, light hearted and engaging. Bryant was sullen and condescending. I really wanted to beat him/them and have no use for that program to this day.

I was there. Stadium was electric and the Illini crowd was loud and into it.

But, I believe that was Tony Eason--not Trudeau. Tony almost single-handedly carried us to the win. Running around for his life. If he doesn't get hurt and have to step out for Jenner for multiple plays, we win.

Whether it affected his demeanor or not, Bryant had less than a month to live.

Actually, both locations suck from a location perspective. Who wants to go to a bowl game in late December or early January in Detroit or NYC? Give me a bowl game in Miami, Los Angeles, or even Nashville . . . Anywhere there's no (or little) winter. And this is from someone who spent the vast majority of my almost 70 years in the North, including 17 years in Alaska.
