Illinois unranked in Coaches Poll (28th)

The good news is that the Pac12 bowl tie ins are still around for the finally time. So Washington and USC will grab those. Which leaves Michigan most likely getting the Citrus Bowl and us getting either the Reliaquest Bowl or Music City bowl. We will battle Iowa for either of them.

If Illinois wins out, I doubt Iowa will be battling us for bowl spot. They already have 4 losses and have a road contest @Nebraska to close season.

The greater interest will be what happens if Iowa beats Nebraska, and they both finish at 8-4. They will be in direct competition with each other. If that happens, the Illini will look great for ReliaQuest Bowl at 9-3.

If Nebraska wins out (@PSU and Iowa), then they will likely get ReliaQuest Bowl over us. I think Michigan will be in Citrus Bowl barring a collapse @Maryland or winning out to make CFP.

Handle business, and I think the floor for the Illini is Music City Bowl at 9-3.

Many of us here value making Bowl game especially somewhere warm. But as much as we ILLINI fans wish, hope and pray for one over the many lean years. It just doesn't matter to the players who believe they are going possibly to the next level. I understand the risks but that is there every game.To leave your Brothers who have worked so hard also just doesn't equate to the preaching of FamILLY, IMO !

The thing now irritating about this scenario is we would be getting penalized for not only playing the #1 and #2 teams and losing but the timing of those loses being closer together which made it easier to have us on the outside looking in trying to work out record back up to the same place.

SEC with the 2 top ranked 1-loss teams, 3 of the 4 top ranked 2-loss teams (ND the 4th), and the 3 top ranked 3-loss teams

ESPN’s resume rankings (SOR) which accounts for strength of schedule, who you beat, and who you lost to ranks:

AP #19 Virginia @ 27
AP #20 Tennessee @ 20
AP #21 JMU @ 24
AP #22 North Texas @ 28
AP #24 Missouri @ 23
AP #24 Tulane @ 25
AP #25 Houston @ 26
AP NR Illinois @ 19

Once again, the most underrated team in the country.

Seems like Las Vegas Bowl (B1G vs. former PAC-12) could have a lot of confusing scenarios. I’m assuming (maybe incorrectly) that they take the top B1G team that’s not in the playoffs as the B1G rep? And the top former PAC-12 team thats not in the B1G as the PAC-12 rep.

What if USC is the top B1G team that’s not in the playoffs? Do they go USC vs. someone like Utah? Or is that a no go because they’re both former PAC-12.

If it’s Mich, I’d guess they’re not going to do something like Michigan vs. USC or Washington, as it would be an all B1G bowl.

A lot of typing on my phone just to say “wonder how this plays out”. Checked the website but couldn’t find any clarification. And all just to say “can we get into that game”? I’d guess no, but I’d like it.

U of I getting snubbed in the polls, you say? Lol I think weve all been here before!!! The most surprising thing is that we got as mich love as we did early season!!!

Laughable. One bad game against a pretty good UW team at their place and we go from likely being in the Top 10-12 to unranked for the past 4 weeks. Makes no dang sense.
So much is timing. Imagine switching the usc game to yesterday. They come in 6-0, 8-1, ranked 10-12 , and we win.

But if we hadn't gotten destroyed by IU things may have been different.

What's Indiana? I can't imagine they're high up. Their schedule is more difficult than it was last year, but not by much.

USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington are still tied into the PAC 12 bowl contract for the remainder of this season. So in the Vegas bowl scenario, USC would be the PAC 12 representative

Here's the thing, if we win out and finish 9-3, and the trends continue the way they have been, we'll pick up 4-5 spots next week and 4-5 spots the week after. We'll finish in that 19/20 range which is exactly where we were last year with the same record and similar season. Just win.

Then there's Conference Championship Week and even more spots available to jump up in the rankings.

Agreed. We are kinda behind the 8 ball here.

yeah you could make a solid case for Illinois being ranked. Two of their losses are to undefeated #1 and undefeated #2, with the other coming @ 7-3 Washington. 3 of their Big Ten wins aren't impressive enough with Rutgers, Maryland, Purdue having a combined 3 Big Ten wins between them. USC is a good win and Duke is a middle of the road ACC team. Ultimately, I think if the losses to Indiana and Ohio State were a bit more respectable, Illinois is probably ranked. Washington losing @ Wisconsin their next game after beating Illinois didn't do any favors either. Seems like a bit of "catch-up" going on with non-power conference teams getting moved up to reflect their overall record because one of them has to be chosen by the CFP Committee.

Indiana is #2 in SOR, #2 in FPI, and either 1 or 2 in all the other predictive metrics too.

Their SOS is #38, so not the strongest, but still decently tough, and they’ve won every game including a 10 point win on the road at the #3 ranked team in FPI along with wins against #20 and #21 in FPI.

Gross.

I think OU is at the top of that group, but after that 🤷‍♂️

OU
ND
Alabama
Miami

Looking at their losses (and games in general) just reinforces my belief that we are getting excessively hammered for the "how" portion of our losses.
Miami doesn’t go from 15 to top 11

The rankings are like voting for prom queen and unfortunately Illinois has long been the ugly, zitty red haired kid with braces in the eyes of whoever votes on this crap!! Illini lose to #1 and now #2 teams in the nation and Washington who rarely loses at home and they aren't ranked at 7-3? What a crock of bull! Illinois also put up more points vs. Ohio St. than anyone else mind you. The bias is blatantly obvious when Illini dropped 15 spots after losing to Indiana and another 8 spots after losing to Ohio St. Absolutely ridiculous drops!! The powers to be clearly wanted Illinois out of the playoff picture, knowing it would be nearly impossible to get back into the top 12. Playoff rankings should be left to Ken-pom or a system similarly based on an algorithm. Keep the bias out of the whole process.
