Saw The Post yesterday. I thought it was decent but not Oscar-worthy. I thought Streep did a very good job, thought Hanks was a bit heavy-handed.

I didn't find the previews to be compelling at all. I'll probably skip this one.

Went to see The Post last night. Really well done and definitely an important movie to see given the current climate in this country. While Meryl Streep (who will probably get an Oscar nomination) and Tom Hanks are the main actors in this film, Bob Odenkirk really stands out even with the limited screen time he has compared to some others.

I haven't seen this film, but Odenkirk is such a strong, versatile actor. Glad he came through!

Yeah. He does really well. Bradley Whitford (who I didn't even recognize in his role) is in this film. David Cross has a few funny lines that come through. Bruce Greenwood pulls off the look of Robert McNamara really well. And you have Matthew Rhys (who I enjoyed when I first started watching the Americans) playing the role of Daniel Ellsberg.

Oscar nominations were announced today: http://oscar.go.com/nominees

Ian, since you're our movie "expert" on here, I'll defer you as to your thoughts on the nominees. Any surprises? Any snubs?

Haha, while I'm flattered by the thought, I'd hardly consider myself an "expert," particularly this year. This last year of my doc program has dug pretty deep into my leisurely film going time. Of the Best Picture nominees I've only seen Dunkirk, Get Out, and The Shape of Water, all of which I feel are deserving of the nomination in their own unique way. Of those three, Dunkirk is the most traditional nomination I suppose, but I like the direction of adding the "social horror" Get Out and sci-fi The Shape of Water to the mix.

The Shape of Water will be the next film I see. I don't watch the awards shows. Granted I don't see all the movies, but I sure feel that a lot of the nominations aren't warranted. I've seen so much excellent work get passed over that I feel it's voters often play favorites or have an agenda they pursue, politics anyone?. I'll just point out one film that got totally overlooked that I felt was deserving of a few nominations, Wind River. It was an awesome movie! All that aside, I hope Logan, Coco, and Blade Runner all get some sort of award, most notably Roger Deakins.

Did anyone see Molly's Game? I thought it was good but not great. Idris Elba was a boss as her attorney and Kevin Costner was very good in a limited role as her father. And Jessica Chastain is exquisite in more than one way. ;)

Did anyone else thoroughly enjoy Black Panther? From my seat, Danai Gurira gave the most enjoyable performance in an action-packed film.

Got a chance to see Black Panther yesterday on my day off. Really enjoyed it. Michael B. Jordan was great in his role and Killmonger was perfect for him. Chadwick Boseman and Letitia Wright are great in their roles.

It's no surprise that this film is currently the best reviewed live action superhero film on Rotten Tomatoes (currently at 97%; even better than The Dark Knight and Iron Man which were both at 94%).

I agree with your take on Killmonger. He was one of the more empathic villains in recent memory.

I haven't seen the film yet, but came across this article and I think it speaks to your comment about empathetic. This was also a great read about the African diaspora in general.

Do you have a link to that article? Michael B. Jordan is a force to be reckoned with.

Ian, any picks for the major categories at the Oscars tomorrow night?

Unfortunately I haven't been able to follow along as closely as I usually do, but I will be rooting for The Shape of Water to pick up a lot of hardware. I saw it with my girlfriend when I was on a weekend trip for an interview to the site I eventually matched with, and we both loved it.

So for completely sentimental reasons, and it being a beautiful film, go Guillermo del Toro & company!

David Ogden Stiers, long known for playing Major Winchester on M*A*S*H, has died at the age of 75.

Aside from M*A*S*H, he also was well known as a voice actor on several Disney films including Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and Lilo & Stitch.

Sad to hear this. I went to grade school with Stiers for a couple of years at Leal School in Urbana, Illinois.

When I read his wiki page, I didn't even know that he was born in Peoria but his family later moved to Urbana and he even went to Urbana High School his freshman and sophomore years (at the same time as Roger Ebert apparently) before the family then moved out to Oregon.

Gotta admit I figured Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri would have won Best Picture.

I personally would have liked to see Darkest Hour or maybe even Dunkirk win it.

Kinda surprised The Shape of Water won it though.
