Brad Underwood Intro Press Conference

Whitman: I am operating under the assumption that [our commits] will continue to play for the University of Illinois unless we hear otherwise.

Saying this after registering some surprise and appreciation at how TF handled the regime change on Twitter.

Who is TF?

I expect the reporters to keep lobbing him softballs today. But I'd like to know about Jamall Walker as much as the next guy.

He has said already that he is giving Jamall space for him to deal with the major issue at hand which is the GAME tonight. They will have a discussion after the Illini season is complete.

Ah, thanks. I had missed that while on the phone. Totally reasonable course of action, I think.

^ that's what I'm inclined to take away from it.

EDIT: oh snap, somebody finally asked Whitman about Walker point-blank. Sounds like JW has "recommended" Walker be on the staff, but that it's ultimately Underwood's decision. Talking about how he's trying to give Underwood a generous staff salary pool.

Walker has the job. Not because BU is going to toady to JW's wishes, but because BU has a lot of respect for JW's opinion. But really, who has had time to talk to anyone yet?

Oh, wait, we're not going to be able to use "JW" without specifying whether that's Josh Whitman or Jamal Walker.

What I love about the trio, however, is how much each of the three of them, from their public statements, want to be at the University of Illinois. Whitman obviously bleeds Orange and Blue. Underwood was all but doing the Illini happy dance during his statement. And Walker, in one interview I saw, was all but teary-eyed at the prospect of having to leave if he wasn't kept around.

Part of this is me I'm sure, but there's a passion for the school and state that's palpable, even over video. This is going to be fun.

We'll step 1 accomplished: BU won the press conference. Of course, if you can't do that you are just beans and weenies in a lasagna world. ;-)

Things Whitman loves about Underwood

1. Hes a winner
2. Develops programs and players
3. Strong identity as a Coach
4. Style of play
5. Integrity
6. Relationship with players.
7. Cares about Illinois, wants to be hear.

The thing Illini fans will love about Underwood:

One day soon we'll be calling him WONDERWOOD.

Points to Josh and twice said, "he's the reason I'm here". :thumb:

I hope this finally puts to rest the notion that the Mike Thomas hires were an Illinois problem. They were a MIKE THOMAS problem.

IDENTITY.

Getting skilled players with fit that are "motored up."

Music to my ears.

JWalk and Mr. Whitman :thumb:

Personally I like JDubs for one of them but JWalk is cool and I just have too much respect now for Mr Whitman

Sounds negative on JW to me. Sure would be less distracting to say I want you on my staff than saying "We will talk later." It would make me too nervous to coach unless I had already decided to leave.
