Who cares how good South Carolina is? Alabama is a historic program and this is an exhibition game. Give me the biggest name out there

We're going to agree to disagree. Indiana is in a game where two top 10 are playing and the outcome of the game means something. Our game means absolutely nothing. The players who made us and South Carolina top 20 teams aren't going to play in the game anyway.

I'm guessing that Pat Bryant would play the game versus Notre Dame, but is looking at the Citrus Bowl as a game where he needs sunglasses and shorts as he chills out on the sidelines.

Do you think that the Indiana kids would give a damn if they lose to ND, but got to play South Carolina as a reward for losing the biggest game that they've ever played in?

There's a reason why kids from the teams that don't make the playoffs ditch their bowl game. The game, itself, is meaningless. The playoffs have killed the bowl system.

Edit: Yes, I agree that if you're a fan, it would be pretty cool to hit the beach when the season is over. That's purely a fans take. If we were in the playoffs, it'd be cool to know that I had a trip to Florida in a couple of weeks. However, the excitement world have absolutely nothing to do with the game and has 100% to do with having a week off of work and 80 degree weather.

If you're a player.... you'd be completely checked out after a playoff loss. It'd take weeks, if not months to look back with appreciation.

More motivation and just a 2 point loss to bama. Also people forget they are on a 6 game win streak arguably one of the hottest teams out there.
Yes, but that doesn’t mean that ESPN, et al., will be talking about it or that any eyeballs will be on it. Bama would have gotten us much more visibility and would have been better for recruiting.

Bowl games and the lead up activities in bowl week are for the fans. You can’t compare a bowl game to SMU playing at Penn State. It’s two different things.

And the Citrus Bowl, where two top 20 teams are matching up, is far more prestigious than the NIT.

A bowl game is a reward for a good season. The first round losers aren’t getting any reward.
Their reward was attempting to win a national championship and the grand stage of those games. All of those playoff games are bowl games (even if first round is at campus sites). With the new CFP format, even the Citrus Bowl is like the NIT now. Outside of the CFP, there is no bowl that is very prestigious anymore. Is it fun for players and fans? Sure, but all players and coaches would much rather be IU or SMU right now than us.

Using your logic... Alabama should be thrilled to be playing in Tampa vs Michigan.
What a great reward for them and their fans... a week of fun in Tampa!

Get real! The playoff is the real reward. It is what every serious program has been playing for all these months. The show on every Tuesday on ESPN was the College Football Playoff projection show. Not the projections for the Citrus or Gator Bowl.

Indiana and SMU will be talked about the next two weeks in the lead up to their games. The Citrus & Gator Bowls will get 3 minutes each on SportsCenter the day the are played.

And I am happy for Illinois, don't get me wrong. But huge difference between playoffs and another bowl game.

Good news is it’s morning game ahead of ours so won’t conflict with ours and we are the lead up to the quarterfinal game.
True, but Illini's game is one of three bowl games at that general time slot. Bama/Mich is the only game at that time slot. Illini got short end of stick, in that respect. I think Citrus Bowl deserves to be only game during that time slot, if it wants to seem more prestigious. ReliaQuest Bowl committee is definitely happier than the Citrus Bowl committee right now.

How does the revenue arrangement work for these quarterfinal games?

A team like Penn State would look to be in higher revenue position playing home game (and if winning making bowl game), than winning conference and getting bye.
I believe ticket sales go to the playoff, but the concessions go to home team. Each first round team/conference gets $4m quarterfinal teams/conference get $8m from CFP.

pretty much
but home team also likely gets some decent flat fee to cover expenses of hosting .

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the SEC pressured the Citrus bowl to pick SC. Bama losing to the worst big ten program (before Bielema got here) with Rutgers would be terrible for the league. Now if they lose it's to Michigan. Feel free to call this crazy.

I have relatives that are big Alabama fans. So I’m one of the few glad I don’t have to hear about it all Christmas. Basketball was torture enough and they don’t even care about basketball. Lol

Several folks have posted that Bama turned down the Citrus. Is there any basis in fact or are you just spewing trash? If Bama did turn down the Citrus, they also turned down $2 Million (Citrus pays 8.something per team; Reliaquest pays 6.something).

Tonight's ESPN Bowl Breakdown program was advertised as "An early look at which college football teams have accepted bids to play in which bowls."
It has spent the first hour and a half breaking down the playoffs that they already broke down for about 5 hours earlier today. They did find about 20 seconds to mention the Citrus Bowl in between the preview of Colorado/BYU and Alabama/Michigan, then right back to the playoffs for the rest of the program.

Do you think that Bama cares about 2M? That is absolute chump change to the program and th SEC doesn't care because they collect either way.

Alabama has hurt feelings about the playoff, which I get. For them to not make the top TWELVE is flat out failure to them.

The optics of playing us confirms that failed season.

The optics and buildup to them playing Michigan, despite both being disappointing this year, is much better for their program, their fans and there enormous egos.

Don't ever think that the name on the front of the jersey doesn't matter.

Alabama vs Michigan is going to bring serious ratings regardless of record and expectations.
