That's a winner!!
OH
Schiano to OSU is basically an audition for Illinois or Purdue or insert Big Ten opening here next year, right?

That's what I think too. It gets him back into coaching at a P5 school auditioning for P5 openings during the next coach hiring cycle.

I agree, and I hope it's us. I think Schiano is the kind of hire, provided he gets notice at tOSU (and how could anyone not), that will make us look like we are serious about getting better.

Anyone paying attention to what is happening at Texas? It seems like the people above Charlie Strong really do not want to see him succeed.

EDIT: He could keep all his orange gear AND fulfills a desire for a diversity hire at a university about 12 hours north ;)

Navy coach to interview at BYU?

That would be a great score for most any program but seems like a really odd fit. I still with the Illini would have went after him.

No kidding! THey will only give a 1 year deal and every coach knows that Strong is gone if they don't win about 9 or 10 games next year...

He is a Mormon I believe. Might make it a fit for him.

Pedal to the Metal to get to Champaign from Austin in 12 hours:)

I'd take Strong here next year for sure if things fall apart for him at Texas.

Why do you think Strong could succeed at Illinois?

I don't see how he recruits to Illinois when he can't even recruit at Texas. His recruiting there has been AWFUL by Texas standards - his current class ranks 48th...48TH

Seems like he'd be a retread without recruiting ability. At least Zook could recruit.

Strong is trying to make recruiting inroads in Texas. His best spot while at Lville was always Florida. He'd be good here with Fla recruits.

The theory would be that Strong at Texas is like Rich Rod at Michigan. The body just rejected the donor organ from minute 1. Never had a chance to even get started.

So you want to bet our future on a guy who failed at a top 5 program, but can recruit Florida really well...hmm, that sounds familiar.

BTW, Zook was twice the recruiter Strong is and he never had a Florida "pipeline" even if he did get some good players there. The only 5* guys came from Chicago and DC.

To be successful in the long-term I think we need a guy who can recruit pretty well in the Midwest and can fill in with some players from Florida and other hotbeds. Mike White always knew his California "pipeline" was a short term solution. He actually started to recruit the Midwest pretty well.

You're kidding yourself if you think we will ever be successful over the long-term in California, Texas, or Florida beyond picking up a handful of good 3* players.

A theory yes, but not a strong one.

I wouldn't bet our football hire on either of these theories.

Sometimes a coach is a terrible got. Strong at Texas is a terrible fit; he had NO chance from the get go. Half the boosters were wanting him gone before he even coached a practice. Give me strong any day of the week

Their last class was 10th.

Strong would be a grand slam hire here. He'd win and build a very good program - I'd say like Mackovic. We're never going to be an Alabama or tOSU so why not look to build something that can compete, maybe make the playoffs once every 10 years and be in the top 15 consistently?

You go to your hotspots, the places you know best, and get the 3 star kids that the better programs don't want or don't have room for. Redshirt the OL's and DL's, and most of everybody else.

And you get better. You get to 6-6 a couple of years, 7-5 a couple, and slowly start building a consistent winner.

Zook could sell ice to an Eskimo, no doubt about that. He had trouble remembering how many players there were or how many quarters there were in the game.

Strong is a much better coach. Better recruiter? Not likely. Good recruiter? Yes.

I'd take him here in a heartbeat.

Yep. MW used the Cali pipeline to win some games and build momentum. What he left Mackovic was decidedly Midwestern talent. And talent it was. One can only wonder where we'd be today had he not been sacrificed on the altar of ncaa hypocrisy.

We should have kept Mike White. Oh what might have been!

Damn the sanctions! Full steam ahead!

Maybe we should just start cheating again...I'd rather be 8-4 or 9-3 with no bowl game than 2-10 with no bowl game ;)
