Lets not be silly. If Lovie wanted to coach here, you'd be pumped, as we all should be. He did NOT get a fair shake in Tampa Bay and is not a bad coach.
2 games over .500 (89-87) and 3 playoff appearances in 11 seasons shouldn't pump anyone up.

Superbowl appearance?
Wouldn't that Super Bowl appearance be part of that 3 out of 11 seasons in the playoffs I mentioned? And while we're at it 3-3 in the playoffs. He's mediocre in every way as a HC. Do not want.

Wouldn't want Love Smith as the head coach of the Universoty of Illinois Fighting Illini? How on earth could you realistically not want Lovie Smith if he for some odd reason wanted to coach in Champaign?

I think I clearly indicated why. He's a mediocre at best HC and you don't even know if he can recruit. People can claim he didn't get a fair shot in TB, but the fact is he had full control of personnel and his defense was not good. The best two years of his Bears tenure Ron Rivera was the DC. Now if you asked about Rivera in Champaign I would say yes, even though he is just now getting over .500 as a coach. He actually can game plan and run different defensive schemes as needed. He's run 4-3 and 3-4 in Chicago and SD.

No, you didn't clearly indicate anything really. You gave his head coaching and playoff record and said you wouldn't want him.

You would say yes to Rivera even though he's just getting over .500? Lmao, that's just ridiculous logic. Ron Rivera would just laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh if offered the Illinois HC job. Lovie Smith as well.

Yes. I clearly indicated why I didn't want Smith. The issue is you and another poster cannot believe that Lovie Smith isn't a good HC. He has a record of mediocrity and without Rivera or Marinelli as a DC, he doesn't have a good defense. You want a HC who isn't very good on the side of the ball he comes from and has an established track record of poor OC hires? Yikes.

hard to look at records when you don't know what someone inherits (note -- not saying yes or no but records are a bad judge). Someone comes in to a 1-15 team.. goes 4-12, then 7-9, then 9-7... 3 year record...20-28. Coach 2 -- comes in to a 14-2 team.... goes 12-4, 10-6 and 9-7... 3 year record 31-17... saying coach #2 is better.

To me, the only issue would be recruiting (not that if he can... would have have the desire).

When I heard that Lovie Smith fired, I do not know why, but I was like I would love to have him as the coach of the Illini. Yes, the weakest part of his coaching, is offense. If I was Lovie and wanted to coach the college game, first I would find an coach who was under Gary Patterson or Art Briles to run my offense. Then I would go recruit the 5-star defensive players, who would want to learn from a defensive genius (yeah I said genius, deal with it), who would to help cultivate them for the NFL. And these 5-star players (as other players) want to be prepared to play in the NFL.

At the end of the day, this is all a pipe dream, but if I was Lovie, I would consider thinking about coaching in college, since some folks these days feel he should be a DC and not a head coach. FYI: I still think he can be a head coach in the NFL, he just needs to work on his offensive coaching scheme.

Thanks for thinking that you know how I would feel about Lovie coming here, but I would certainly not be pumped to see him as our head coach. I'd tolerate him maybe coaching the secondary as he has the experience, but even then pumped would be far removed from my vocabulary when describing how I'd feel about that.

You must be absolutely livid about our coaching situation now if Lovie Smith qualifies as *maybe* a secondary coach. Wow

If i were cubit id give lovie some interest....id seriously hire lovie as a assistant coach.....a new a.d would definitely give cubit at least interest at restructuring a contract with lovie as an assistant coach.....

but bama is looking for a d coordinator.....if they got lovie that would be a steal...smh

I know I am gong with a stereotype here, but defensive minded coaches tend to like boring, run oriented offenses. The general mind set is, don't screw it up for the defense. We'll hold them, you just score enough.

Lovie did this in Chicago. Not that he would come here, but if he did, IMO no way he would hire anyone resembling an Art Briles style of offense. Heck, I think he'd go back to the wing T before he'd go wide open.

JMHO.

Well let's test that theory-

Lane Kiffin? 7-6 at TN after 5-15 stint with Oakland... mediocre HC
Wanny was 42-31 with Miami and 42-31 at Pitt...solid hire.
Bill Callahan 15-17 in Oakland and 27-22 at Nebraska...mediocre not successful
Groh was 9-7 with the Jets and 59-54 at UVA...mediocre and not successful

OTOH, there are the Saban's and the Petrino's (does he really count? He didn't last a whole season in the NFL). Jim Mora is a good example of spending more than several seasons in the NFL and heading back to college. 31-33 as HC of Atlanta and Seattle. 37-16 at UCLA. So to say hiring a guy who was an HC from the NFL is a slam dunk hire, the numbers don't show that to be the case.

Another article that puts us at the bottom. This time we're last out of the 24 new hires.

Articles like this mean nothing. Retaining Cubit was the absolute right move given our current situation. Optimistically he is a professional coach who made the best of a bad situation who now has the chance to succeed in his own right. Pessimistically, he is a place holder who offers short term stability.

Lets be honest. With no AD, it would be very hard to sign a coach like Babers or Fuentes. They aren't going to risk making the jump to a power five conference only to be on the outs with a new AD.

Who cares where others rank our "hire". Bottom line it was the right move and arguably the best move we could make.

Strictly my opinion, but I think Babers would have come here regardless, assuming we beat Syracuse to the punch.

Fuentes, I agree. He probably would not have come here even with an AD in place. He clearly had a better offer, and probably better offers waiting if he did not take VT.

Don't get me wrong, I love Babers. Coaches are looking for the best opportunity. If we offered Babers and he accepted and struggled his first year. Then we get a new AD who may have his own coach in mind.... What would happen? If you are an AD you have no reason to stick with a guy you didn't hire who is struggling. I am sure that Babers gets that. And while he might love the opportunity to coach here, and I don't doubt that we had draw to him, you aren't going to take that risk when you have a sure thing.

That is just my opinion.

I just want folks on here to 1) be realistic about our options and 2) Understand that we are lucky to have a guy like Cubit who was ready and willing to pick up the pieces of the mess Beckman left.
