The college football playoffs to me have been a disaster. The teams picked to participate by the SO-CALLED EXPERTS based on some data they made up. It is very clear by putting the eyeball on the games played that SMU, INDIANA, TENNESSEE and Clemson had no business being there. This playoff has nothing to do with actually determining a true National Champion but is all about MONEY! If they really want to determine a National Champion [best team] than quit scheduling all the cupcake games and play real football teams one on one for 12-13 games.

That league plays on Sunday. College football will never be standardized like that, it's just not constructed that way and likely never will be. The only way I see something standardized is if the B1G and SEC break off and form a 48 team "league", with some rules around divisions and scheduling.

Speaking just of CFB, I don't blame the conferences one bit that they've figured out ways to monetize the hell out of their products, and then bring it all together for the playoff, for even more money. Why are their products so valuable? Because we as a nation consume every morsel of college football that's put out there. Our appetite for it is endless at this point.

To me, the playoffs so far have proved that there should be an 8 team playoff, not 12 (or more). Of course, the past several years, even the 4 team playoffs had blow outs.

The NFL plays an imbalanced schedule. They take into account the previous years record when scheduling cross divisional games. Better teams are more likely to face each other across the divisions.

I'd be interested in something like this in college and then go strictly by record for playoffs.

Carve up the conferences into 5-6 team divisions. Play all your division, then play a couple inter division games and inter conference games. Schedule being set by the previous years results so top teams from the previous year will likely play each other. Only teams with the most difficult schedules are eligible for the playoffs. Everyone else is playing for bowl bids.

Basically end up with a sort of relegation with respect to the playoffs where if your team has a very bad year it moves down a level of opponents and won't play a schedule that can get it into the playoffs. But the better teams will have played each other in the regular season and have much more comparable schedules.

I think the problem is finding 12 teams that actually have a legitimate shot of winning a NC. I agree with Illwinsagain, eight teams would be more appropriate. Then, at least, there would be no undeserving teams getting a first round bye. However, more games equals more money and that's what this is really all about.

well , they won’t contract .
if anything , they will go from 12 to 16, as it doesn’t add any time to the basically 3 week time line of start to finish .

but , they do need to figure out when to play the 4 extra games .
two games on Thurs night ?
two games on Fri night
four games on Sat ? 12, 3, 6 & 9 ?

I don’t think it’s about 12 teams that could legitimately win the title — there’s four, maybe five, that could in any given year. But any one of those teams could win one game, possibly upsetting one of the teams that could win it all. That opens a path for the others.

Think of the basketball tournament. Not all of the 68 teams could realistically win the title. But the tournament is thrown is a lot of fun when a 16 beats a 1 and a 15 beats a two. It hasn’t happened yet in football, but it will one day soon.
