I think Matt Olson, Marcel Ozuna, Sean Murphy, and Charlie Morton might all have other thoughts…
Olson and Murphy were both acquired via trade.

Okay, but Atlanta gave up a ton of prospect capital & immediately gave them both huge extensions. They were developed in Oakland.Olson and Murphy were both acquired via trade.
It is but how "bad" the contract is depends on how much is deferred, IMO. I haven't seen that yet.Ohtani to the Dodgers for 10 years/$700 million.
That is… a ton.

Per MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Ohtani’s deal includes what one source called “unprecedented deferrals,” including the majority of his salary -- which was Ohtani’s idea. He wanted to mitigate the CBT and cash-flow burdens to let the Dodgers have the flexibility to be competitive.Which is a load of crap and a way to circumvent the CBT threshold
I wonder what those benefits are with that structure? I’d guess he could take out loans against his future earnings, similar to how billionaires commonly scam out of paying taxes by doing the same with unrealized capital gains, but idk if that works because he’ll still realize that income (and the tax obligations) as the deferments come due. There are also tax benefits because of the deferrals
If that was true he would play for league minimum. the truth is above all else he wanted $700,000,000. He hopes that they can still win.Per MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Ohtani’s deal includes what one source called “unprecedented deferrals,” including the majority of his salary -- which was Ohtani’s idea. There are also tax benefits because of the deferrals, the source told Feinsand, but they were “primarily about allowing the team to be successful on the field, because above all else, he wants to win.”
The union would never allow him to play for the minimum. If that was true he would play for league minimum. the truth is above all else he wanted $700,000,000. He hopes that they can still win.
All that money deferred, I hope he can afford to eat in the off-season.
I wonder if he can opt out in case $70,000,000 per season isn't enough?

Overall they win with the guys they draft but thanks for pointing out those 4 guys for me.I think Matt Olson, Marcel Ozuna, Sean Murphy, and Charlie Morton might all have other thoughts…
Just because I was curious... Top 12 players (WAR) on 2023 Braves:
Acuna - Signed by Braves
Olson - Acquired via trade
Riley - Drafted by Braves
Albies - Signed by Braves
Murphy - Acquired via trade
Strider - Drafted by Braves (originally drafted by Cleveland threw years prior but didn't sign)
Harris II - Drafted by Braves
Ozuna - Acquired via trade
Morton - Acquired via Free Agency (was drafted by Braves originally in 2002, but had spent 2009 - 2020 outside the organization)
Bryce Elder - Drafted by Braves
Fried - Acquired via trade
Arcia - Acquired via trade
Whoops, good catch.Ozuna was acquired via free agency. Otherwise, spot on. The Braves spend money, but largely do so on extending the players they acquired as amateurs or through trade.
MLB must close this loophole. Completely defeats the purpose of the CBT. Wait for the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets to keep exploiting thisSaw a report that said Ohtani is taking a salary of 2M per year for the next 10 years and is deferring the other 680M.
It sounds like his "cap number" for luxury tax purposes is 40-50M but yeah, definitely need to close the loophole.MLB must close this loophole. Completely defeats the purpose of the CBT. Wait for the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets to keep exploiting this
Excellent!I'd like to comment on all the Cubs' moves so far but I don't know where to start.
breaking news : they are adding two new flavors of dippin dots for 2024I'd like to comment on all the Cubs' moves so far but I don't know where to start.
I know there is time but the status quo would be a disaster. Losing FA's and not signing equal replacements is not good and you need to give up guys if you trade. One publication has the team as it stands right now with wins in the 70's. I guess we have to have faith in Jed......and Ricketts.I know it feels like the Cubs aren’t doing anything, but pretty much nobody is doing anything. 40 of mlbtraderumors.com’s top 50 free agents are still un-signed.
Baseball’s usual slow-to-start offseason is being even slower than usual this year.
