Contrary to people who think we can still catch the Brewers, (5 games out with 11 to play), I am actually rooting for them. If we win in the first round I'd much rather play them then Philly. If Philly catches them in the regular season, we have to play Philly. Actually, it would be OK if they both lose a lot of games as long as the Brewers keep their 1.5 game lead.

Gibson went 12-0 from 6/2 to 7/30 in 1968. All complete games, according Baseball Almanac. ERA of 1.12 for the season.

I think Boyd needs a break. We will be close to winning the top WC spot by his next start. I would start either Sokora or Assad next week. Or just skip his start as we have a day off before we play the Mets. We aren’t going to catch the Brewers so giving breaks to our starters is a goood thing as our bench is deeper now with Alcantara and Ballesteros added to the roster.

Probably half of Gibson's starts were complete games, and you can bet that none of them were 5 innings unless it was cancelled after 5 because of rain.

I hated Gibson when I was 12 in 1968. I don't hate opposing players now.
fun fact Grandpa...........Bob Gibson had 251 wins and 255 complete games..........awesome.....

Mr. Gibson is my all time # 1 most favorite Cardinal........

he really really is.....

I met him at a signing. I asked him if his shoulder was tired after 255 complete games. He asked if that was how many he threw. Of course that leaves out the minors, etc. I didn't want to go get an autograph from a Cardinal, but I went for a friend who was working his tail off for free on a church addition. I mean, how do you turn that down?

I was going to post that I don’t remember ever being so annoyed at a Cubs team that was 20 or more games over .500 but then I remembered some of those Pinella teams were somewhat annoying in terms of their approach as well. I guess I’m jaded.
I agree with you.i just got say about lou he was always entertaining never knew what the guy was going to do

Only the 3rd time in his career he has thrown over 135 innings. (174.1)
The last time?
2019.
He might need a little rest.
That is what I think. We have a day off on Monday so skipping him or starting Assad would be a smart thing to do. Rea going today, Imanaga going tomorrow, Taillon going Saturday with Assad going Sunday. We will throw Horton on Tuesday which should be his last start of the regular season. Rea can go on Wednesday and if we have e clinched the top spot by then, they might throw Sokora a bone and start him against the Cards then Assad again on Saturday then play the reliever game on Sunday. Boyd needs time off and giving Horton a full weeek off will help him get ready for the playoffs.

Bob Gibson was great, no doubt, but this is a Cubs forum.

May I interject something and comment at this juncture at this point in time? A Cub perhaps?

Ferguson Jenkins.

284 career wins, 267 complete games. Six consecutive 20-win seasons with the Cubs.

And Fergie was taller than Bob. But Bob hit more homers than Fergie. Bob Gibson was scary. Fergie was Canadian.

I admire them both equally.

I lived in St. Louis from 1960 to 1973 as a Cubs fan - and survived.

And hit more batters.
If he threw at hitters today like he did in the 60's his stats wouldn't be as nearly as good. He would be suspended for a good portion of the season.
Different game today.

Bob Gibson threw at righties' heads. Headhunter. Didn't have same success with lefties, for obvious reasons.
