Wait, does Paul Skenes qualify as a "top guy"

Not sure - but he's got good taste.

How many guys don't look at least a little smug after they get into one? Hitting is mostly failure. You have to enjoy the moments when it all comes together.

Especially if you are, like, the least "clutch" guy to ever swing a bat.
My post was meant to be sarcastic. I should have realized that might be hard to decipher considering some of the previous posts regarding Suzuki.

Good series. Probably a sweep without the bad defense last night. Signs of life at the plate for Swanson is nice. PCA needs to settle down at the plate, had some easy walks, with his speed you'd rather him take them than try to be the hero every at bat.

Rea, Suzuki, Swanson, Tucker, Busch. All of the regular heroes. Once Swanson hit the first one the guys thought that it could be done again.

Go Cubs Go!

I'm starting to think you guys think it is pure chance and coincidence that he hits a HR and a triple last night when the game is already well decided against minor league relievers, but strikes out in 3 pitches in a 1-1 game against the Phillies' relievers.

It's pretty obvious that Suzuki can hit the minor league scrubs the Pirates throw out there, he's perfectly capable of that, also most of the average pitchers in this league, but the top end guys he just doesn't hit ever at all, which makes perfect sense since Japan doesn't have anyone like Alvarado out of their bullpen.
You might have waited until after Thursday's game to consider posting this.........

4 years of failure is not erased by a game in Pittsburgh on May 1st. Suzuki has a lot of work to do just to get back to a WPA of ZERO for his career...

Seiya leads the Cubs is just about every statistical hitting category. Every one. He hits after Tucker, so they're both seeing the exact same pitching. You have your biases, we all get it, but you have no viable argument through 32 games this year.

As I mentioned before, this team has had a few 15 game stretches in both of the last few years that have kept them out of the playoffs. Dive into those games and they're losing lots of 1 run games and check the box scores and Seiya is 0-5 with 3 K's and 7 left on base or whatever it happens to be. He owns this team's lack of success more than anyone, and until that changes, I'm not sure why it's strange to be hard on him.

Just one person's perspective for the future of this thread, but what we are seeing is genuinely troll-level behavior.

Following this post, I'm done engaging with these disingenuous arguments fueled by confirmation bias and without question to me some underlying unresolved bias being projected onto Seiya.

Go Cubs.

A couple of interesting illusions are: that homeruns when your team is leading aren't as valuable; that one player is responsible for one run losses; and that every at bat isn't a clutch at bat.

Obviously. Suzuki isn’t a perfect hitter. But I find when someone has a good case they don’t have to rely on exaggeration (falsehoods) to further their case. I glanced through his game logs fairly quick, but looks like Suzuki had exactly one game the previous two seasons where he went 0-5 with 3 Ks. I believe he left 4 men on base (0-2 RISP). Oh, and Cubs won 7-6.

As a "fan", are you rooting for him to do better? Sounds like you're happy when he fails.

Moises Ballesteros is utterly destroying AAA pitching right now. At some point you have to find a place for him on this roster and bring him up. Maybe it’s time for Turner to be “injured” for a couple weeks.

Also, Shaw is now OPSing .943. I think Nicky Lopez’s time on the roster will be a short one.

Ballesteros is the Cubs hitting prospect I'm most excited to join the show. Wish he had more position flexibility (like 1B), but his bat will likely carry his team value whenever he arrives.

It goes beyond just situational 'clutch' hitting.

That 2016 team won a World Series because they had multiple guys like Rizzo who would put up a 15 pitch at bat in a key spot in a game and get a big hit against one of the best pitchers in the league.

If you guys honestly see someone like Suzuki as someone who can do that consistently, I guess carry on your merry way. I've watched 99% of his at bats and the elite pitchers usually dispose of him in 3 or 4 pitches and a lot of his swings in those kinds of at bats are check swings. He has non competitive swings more often than any big leaguer I've ever seen.
