That pitch sequence by Palencia on Ortiz was nasty. On 0-1, he paints the outside corner with an 89 mph slider and then on 0-2, he throws it to the same spot with a 101 mph fastball. Dude was helpless.

Honestly, I picked a great first game to go to this year, and them singing the stretch was just icing on top
He's becoming a little bit too much of a boom or bust guy right now, but you can live with hitting out of the 4 spot. His job is to put the ball over the fence and drive in runs. He's doing both. I would like to see the K's drop and for his outs to be productive. That said, I've never seen a guy smoke as many balls over 100 MPH like he does that consistently find a glove.
By biggest issue right now is that you simply can't have Swanson hitting 5th. Busch needs to be in that spot, then Hoerner, then Swanson in the 7 hole. That's where he was thriving. Not sure why they moved him back up in the order? Counsell seems to be a little stubborn here, but I'm sure he's got his reasons. He generally pushes the right buttons.
Also, they need Amaya back badly because Kelly has regressed to his mean and McGuire just isn't very good. The Cubs had a good thing going with the Amaya/Kelly platoon. It'll be nice to get that back.
We're winning a lot of games with more than a couple of important pieces out.

And that was after an amazing catch in the top half of the inning. He may be the only CF in baseball that catches that one.
Just watching the trajectory of that ball from the behind the plate angle... looks like a ball that should be impossible for a CF to get to. Just amazing.
Feels like a big game tonight. Still only June, but the Cubs have an opportunity to take a commanding division lead and to put the team that’s won the division in 3 of the last 4 years in a really big hole.

In any other league in the past 80 years, you are probably not wrong, but:
Ohtani is back in the rotation now. If he is league average or better on the mound moving forward, he's going to run away with it again. Obviously, he wasn't good his first time out, but because he is so important to their lineup, he hasn't been able to get any tune up innings in the minors. I suspect he will figure it out.

I’m really leery of those starts. 2 of them were against the woeful Pirates and Rockies. The more recent start against the Phils was meh. Gave up 2 HRs and took him 100 pitches to get through 5 innings.
He’s less than a month since giving up 7 hits and 4 walks in 4 innings without recording a K against the Padres.
I think he is working his way back. The Cubs need a starter and I don't know they will get one better. I think he is better than all but Imanaga since Steele out for the year.
