Today is the day I stopped caring about the 2025 cubs. If they don’t, why should I.

Me too. Enough is enough. Counsel is not the manager the front office thought they were getting. He should at least move Tucker out of the top slots in the batting order. They bring Cassie up and sit him on the bench. Oh well - it was fun while it lasted.

Before I didn't think they wanted to "offend" him by dropping him down in the order because they wanted him to return next year.
At this point I couldn't care less. Bat him 7th or 8th.
But then again, who should be in the middle of the order? There's no one who can make a case that they should be there.

Honestly.......Shaw.

To me:

Hoerner
Shaw
Busch
Kelly
Tucker
Suzuki
PCA
Swanson
Happ/Caissie

That should be the order and see what happens. It staggers the lefties and puts guys who put the ball in play consistently at the top of the order..

David Bote, Cody Bellinger, Patrick Wisdom, Mike Tauchman. Would have been better than our subs.

Bote when they cut him last season. They got rid of him because he was making the other guys look bad.

I never thought I would ever hear anybody say that they wanted David Bote back.

Bellinger and Tauchman are better than our starters.

Good reasons to be at Wrigley Field today: beautiful ballpark, beautiful day, almost nearly cold beer, beautiful friends and beautiful USAF Thunderbirds flyover. I experienced all this in 1989 with free tickets for four. Plus Jerome Walton and a Cubs win.

Otherwise, forget about it.

Shine is certainly off the season, but plenty of time to buff up its luster. Would have been nice to win the division, but that looks unlikely. Regain their footing, finish season strong and see what Cubs can do in playoffs.

In the AL, I’m rooting for Seattle because they seemed to have a plan nearing the deadline and they executed it. It did help that their needs fit the market, but they got the two bats they needed and a middle reliever. Suarez has been scuffling, but Naylor and Ferguson have been nice shots in the arm. And even with Suarez’s struggles so far, I think it is underrated how much of a positive impact there can be on the team when management goes out and fills your needs with arguably the two best bats available.

Beautiful day? Sunshine, yes. But hot and humid today in Chicago, they say. Still, Cub bats may go cold and dry again.

Looking at the stats since the ASB:

Shaw has been far and away the best bat on the team. Not close.

Hoerner has done Hoerner things.

Turner has been the reliable bat off the bench they’d hoped he be since the start of the season.

Happ and PCA have been league average bats. Happ’s paid too much for that to be his contribution and PCA has regressed to what most thought he’d be before spoiling us during the first half of the season.

We wouldn’t have even noticed Happ’s and PCA’s trail off if the rest of the team hadn’t turned into absolute doggy poo. Particularly Tucker, Busch and Suzuki. All three have been awful for a month.

Horton has basically been unhittable since the ASB. Boyd has continued his excellent season. Colin Rea has been his usual unspectacular, steady self.

Shota has really struggled since coming off the IL. Brown has been bad, but not as horrible as before the ASB. Assad and Taillon have combined for 1 appearance.

Keller has been perfect. Palencia and Thielbar have continued their excellent years.

Pomeranz has been bad and Brasier has been DFA-bad. The new guys, Kittridge and Taylor, have barely pitched. Same for Hodge coming off the IL.

ETA: it’s a sad statement on this team that it’s been the two rookies who’ve really stepped up when the going got tough.

Being in Ohio, I don’t get to see tons of Cubs’ games. So I was happy to catch last third of game today when I got home. Tuned in to see Shota’s last strikeout. Nice little rally for Cubs and pen got job done. Good to see Tucker get 2 hits. They weren’t loud, but those are the kind that can signal some change in luck. Let’s put together a winning streak.

Why mess with a well oiled offensive machine and let him play the last 2 days against right handers ?

Who is Pittsburgh's advance scout? They intentionally walked Happ to get to Hoerner in the 8th.

First game they won when trailing at any time during the game in last 45 days.

I was shocked that Pittsburgh did that. I would have pitched to Happ and take my chances as he is not hitting right now as we all know. Thankfully, it worked in our favor for a change.

$8,000,000 for Counsel to pitch 10 ERA Ben Brown in a 1 run game.

Gotta save the good bullpen arms for the Brewers series because we are 10 games behind them with 45 games left. Surely that’s going to wind up a competitive race!!!

Tucker’s luck yesterday didn’t seep into today, but Happ was in the middle of three of the Cubs four runs. Baby steps. Next up, win #3 in a row.

Cubs pick up a game on the Brewers today for the first time in what feels like an eternity.
we aren’t catching the Brewers now . we are down 8 with 6 weeks to go . not impossible, but really really hard to pick up a game & a half a week , for 6 weeks straight

agree with basically all of this except the Shota has struggled since the IL, he has had a shaky outing or two but struggled is not really it. his era since coming off the IL is 3.24 with a .84 whip. not too shaby

Cubs starters are the only reason the Cubs haven't absolutely cratered since the allstar break. Starters era since the Break is 3.02. To put that in perspective the Brewers who have won like every game since the break has a 3.46. This goes to show you despite how important starting pitching is if you can't hit you are gonna scuffle.

I understand why folks have gotten disgruntled with the team. This entire summer has been pretty middling but all is not lost. With a 13-13 June, a 14-10 July and in August we are 7-8 so far. The summer total is 34-31. With the great start to the season that isn't really a disaster.

This team has not been swept all year, I should knock on wood somewhere, which is kinda amazing. When they NEED a win they get it. Like yesterday...they NEEDED that win, and somehow despite not hitting well all weekend they squeaked out the series. I've fully giving up catching the Brewers the run they have been on is beyond the pale so good on them. but a series win here would be outstanding and with the manageable road trip to finish out August and put a cap on the summer is not awful.

Go 8-6 the rest of august, finish the month at 15-14, I'll take it. Baseball is such a LONG season and when your gripping day to day like I do it can be hard not to lose sight of the goal which is the playoffs. All bets are off at that point.
