At 6-1, if you're a manager, you have a choice. 1)Go to the pen early, probably burn it out when you have three games in a row coming up....in the hopes of an extremely unlikely comeback or 2)In Shota's last start of the year, let him take it as far as he safely can and eat up some innings.

It was the right choice IMO. Guessing the pen is going to be used quite a bit this weekend with potentially a bullpen game involved.
I have to respectfully disagree. The Cubs cut the lead to 6-2 in the 5th. The last 2 runs were uncalled for. He had 2 men on and 2 outs and they were hitting him like crazy. Next guy doubles, driving in 2. Then they take him out. Without those last 2 runs maybe Seiya's 3 run home run in the bottom of the inning would have got them within 1 and the game is played differently.

If it wasn't for 2 spectacular outfield catches he would have probably given up double digits in his both career starts against the Mets at Wrigley. Tipping pitches?

Either way, keeping him in too long might have had him lose what little confidence he had going into the playoffs. If you're worried about overusing your bullpen and willing to concede the game, put in your worst reliever and have him get rocked the rest of the game. And use a position player for an inning.

2 games ago the Mets came back from 6-1.

So we have won 2 of the last seven, correct? We have a 2 game lead with 3 to play. It's crazy that I don't like our chances.

We've actually only won one of our last seven; however, I look at someone as recent as the 2023 Rangers. That team lost 4 of their final 6 to end up in the 5th seed and had to travel for their WC series instead of being the 2 seed where the Astros took with the same record. They end up 90-72 which we could very well end up at. They had a stretch in August where they lost 8 straight and 9 of 10 and guess what... they ended up winning the world series. I think this whole thing that you have to be smoking hot in September in order to win the WS is blown out of proportion.

Yeah, I knew that. 4 to the Reds, 2 to the floundering Mets.

Thanks for the pep talk.

Can’t remember if magic number is 2 or 3. Regardless, I got the Cubs knocking 2 off that number today. Cubs win an afternoon game and then I like the pitching matchup for AZ-SD game.

Go Colin and go Cubs!

People like to criticize the job Jed Hoyer has done and some of it is warranted in my opinion (bad bench to start season and not active enough at trade deadline — and no I’m not saying he should have traded the big 3 or 4 prospects). But have to give him big time credit for the Boyd and Rea signings. I believe the two lead team in games started and have performed pretty well overall. Not sure where the team would be without them.

Nico Hoerner needs to go 6 for 8 to win the batting average title .306 to .305. 5 for 7 results in .30486 Versus Turners .30494 losing by .00008 if my calculations are correct. 182 hits in 597 AB versus 179 hits in 587 AB for Turner. Even 4 for 4 would leave him .30471 and .00023 short.
