Apologies if I missed anything, but should we expect any additional contract extensions or modifications for Brad after this run? Seems like he’s happy in Champaign, but can’t hurt trying to solidify that even more

What are the chances we’re getting Mike Boynton?

I know one of the assistants will need to move on for that to happen - but OSU has a ton of talent in the portal that would be good to get
@illini0440 saw you liked this so piggy backing off this post….do we expect any movement in general from the assistant on staff?

Which is the perfect time to get one of them a head coaching job- then get Mike Boynton!

Successful programs have assistants move on the head coaching jobs- it would actually be a very good sign

I'm not saying our assistants are not good or not worthy ... But the fact I am hearing 0 chatter about Luke Murray or Kimani Young for jobs should tell everyone what these universities think about hiring assistants ...

That absolutely shocks me. The only possible explanations for no real interest for assistants for UConn and Illinois is that the head coach really controls things and there isn’t confidence that the assistants are getting the necessary development to lead a program.

I think of the lack of success of the K or Izzo trees as an example where if Danny and Underwood are more of a command and control coach that the assistants wouldn’t be in demand. But I still don’t see how some program wouldn’t look at the UConn assistants and someone like Chester Frazier and think they would have good qualities to lead their own programs. Every head coach was a first time head coach at one point in time.

No clue about UConn, but this isn't what I've heard about Underwood.

Just wanted to take a moment to post a (barely) semi-OT list of Big Ten schools who have ever plucked a coach from another Power Five school (as currently defined). For simplicity's sake, I only looked back to about 1980 or so, to keep it at least a little bit "modern." Also, this is limited to instances where School A presumably WANTED to keep its former coach and failed to fend off advances from School B, rather than a coach jumping ship because he thought he was about to be fired (like Steve Alford, lol). And it gets murky when you include schools like Butler (my sister graduated from there, love the Dogs!), which didn't have ANYWHERE near the prestige when some of these guys left there that they did after Brad Stevens, plus they have barely been in the Power Five, etc.

ILLINOIS
Brad Underwood from Oklahoma State (2017)
Lon Kruger from Florida (1995)

INDIANA
Tom Crean from Marquette (2008)
Kelvin Sampson from Oklahoma (2006)

IOWA
Todd Lickliter from Butler (2007) ... *Butler was not Power Five at the time
Tom Davis from Stanford (1986)
George Raveling from Washington State (1983)

MARYLAND
Kevin Willard from Seton Hall (2022)
Mark Turgeon from Texas A&M (2011)
Gary Williams from Ohio State (1989)

MICHIGAN
John Beilein from West Virginia (2007)

MICHIGAN STATE
Never

MINNESOTA
Never

NEBRASKA
Barry Collier from Butler (2000) .... *Butler was not Power Five at the time

NORTHWESTERN
Never

OHIO STATE
Chris Holtmann from Butler (2017)
Thad Matta from Xavier (2004) ... *Xavier was not Power Five at the time
Jim O'Brien from Boston College (1997)
Garry Williams from Boston College (1986)

PENN STATE ... *Only became Power Five in 1992
Never

PURDUE
Never (but they've had two coaches during this entire time, lol)

RUTGERS ... *Only became Power Five in 1995
Never

WISCONSIN
Never

All things considered, I would actually say Illinois and Maryland have had the most impressive hires here, considering (A) they both had one very recently and (B) the relatively good basketball tradition at schools like Seton Hall, Oklahoma State, etc.

Where have Illini assistants gotten HC jobs

Tony Yates (Lou Henson) - Cincinnati
Jimmy Collins (Lou Henson) UI Chicago Circle
Rob Judson (Lon Kruger) - Northern Illinois
Dee Brown (Dir player development under John Groce) - Roosevelt College

I can't remember anybody else. I searched internet but did not see anybody. Lou and Bruce were very loyal to their assistants some would stay too loyal as they were allowed to stay when program was having trouble (recruiting, winning, etc). I think Brad is more pragmatic and it is a good sign that he has had assistant coaches poached by other programs - Chin, Orlando, Gentry. Should be interesting to see if Tim, Chester or Geoff can land a HC job.

You listed Dee Brown, who was as you noted on staff at Illinois but not a coach. Player at IL only, not a coach there, but: Roger Power, Valparaiso (I know you knew this :) )

I think quite a few players have become coaches

Roger Powell - Valp
Sergio McClain - Parkland
Tony Wysinger - Illinois Central

Technically Kruger hired Derek Thomas who ended up being the HC at WIU. But he never actually coached here IIRC. He was the guy that was going to bring David Lee to Illinois. That’s one of my favorite “what might have been” thoughts.
