Where have Illini assistants gotten HC jobs

Tony Yates (Lou Henson) - Cincinnati
Jimmy Collins (Lou Henson) UI Chicago Circle
Rob Judson (Lon Kruger) - Northern Illinois
Dee Brown (Dir player development under John Groce) - Roosevelt College

I can't remember anybody else. I searched internet but did not see anybody. Lou and Bruce were very loyal to their assistants some would stay too loyal as they were allowed to stay when program was having trouble (recruiting, winning, etc). I think Brad is more pragmatic and it is a good sign that he has had assistant coaches poached by other programs - Chin, Orlando, Gentry. Should be interesting to see if Tim, Chester or Geoff can land a HC job.
I think Les Wothke went to Western Michigan

amongst many stops at the bar and one epic interview with a reporter ex.

Too bad he was a drunk. I think he was as good or better than Bill Self.
I felt the same way as you. When he was at Illinois, Gillispie (I’ll always remember “Gill is pie” when spelling his name) felt like he was a future coaching superstar. He has obviously had a difficult time overcoming personal demons. Having to deal with the nut jobs at Kentucky probably didn’t help much in that regard as well.

Technically Kruger hired Derek Thomas who ended up being the HC at WIU. But he never actually coached here IIRC. He was the guy that was going to bring David Lee to Illinois. That’s one of my favorite “what might have been” thoughts.
The st louis pipeline has panned out about as well as the Canadian pipeline. At least we got the IU upset.

I hope McCollum is successful at Drake. First, since I live in the Des Moines area, I want to have an enjoyable team to watch 20 minutes from home. Second, after the disastrous Kim Anderson experiment at Mizzou, I’d like to see someone make the jump from D-II to D-I. It’s always good to have as many possible avenues for coaching options and opportunities.

Gillepsie was at Illinois 2 seasons. I would say that Self is good at placing his assistants at HC jobs.

Is Muss one of those guys whose system works at first and there's lots of hype/energy around it, but then everyone figures it out and adjusts and it's kinda ho-hum at that point?

As soon as USC opened it had Muss written all over it.
