Obviously you've never visited. Don't sleep on the North-Central and Northwest areas of the state.
Arkansas is growing like crazy, beautiful landscape. I hope to see BU retire as the Illinois coach!

This definitely sucks - they have some really good transfers in the portal - Javon Small would have been a great get- smart move by May

I would not have been opposed to Brad letting someone go to make room for Boynton, our defense needs enough improving to justify that. And it wouldn’t be just for the current transfers, Boynton is a really good recruiter as well

Just wanted to take a moment to post a (barely) semi-OT list of Big Ten schools who have ever plucked a coach from another Power Five school (as currently defined). For simplicity's sake, I only looked back to about 1980 or so, to keep it at least a little bit "modern." Also, this is limited to instances where School A presumably WANTED to keep its former coach and failed to fend off advances from School B, rather than a coach jumping ship because he thought he was about to be fired (like Steve Alford, lol). And it gets murky when you include schools like Butler (my sister graduated from there, love the Dogs!), which didn't have ANYWHERE near the prestige when some of these guys left there that they did after Brad Stevens, plus they have barely been in the Power Five, etc.

ILLINOIS
Brad Underwood from Oklahoma State (2017)
Lon Kruger from Florida (1995)

INDIANA
Tom Crean from Marquette (2008)
Kelvin Sampson from Oklahoma (2006)

IOWA
Todd Lickliter from Butler (2007) ... *Butler was not Power Five at the time
Tom Davis from Stanford (1986)
George Raveling from Washington State (1983)

MARYLAND
Kevin Willard from Seton Hall (2022)
Mark Turgeon from Texas A&M (2011)
Gary Williams from Ohio State (1989)

MICHIGAN
John Beilein from West Virginia (2007)

MICHIGAN STATE
Never

MINNESOTA
Never

NEBRASKA
Barry Collier from Butler (2000) .... *Butler was not Power Five at the time

NORTHWESTERN
Never

OHIO STATE
Chris Holtmann from Butler (2017)
Thad Matta from Xavier (2004) ... *Xavier was not Power Five at the time
Jim O'Brien from Boston College (1997)
Garry Williams from Boston College (1986)

PENN STATE ... *Only became Power Five in 1992
Never

PURDUE
Never (but they've had two coaches during this entire time, lol)

RUTGERS ... *Only became Power Five in 1995
Never

WISCONSIN
Never

All things considered, I would actually say Illinois and Maryland have had the most impressive hires here, considering (A) they both had one very recently and (B) the relatively good basketball tradition at schools like Seton Hall, Oklahoma State, etc.
Great stuff!

Swiping Brad from OkSt was an absolute masterclass by Josh. Their AD thought they could apply pressure by not extending Brad's contract until reaching its final year. Instead, it made the buyout affordable and gave Josh the chance to say "Brad, I won't play that game, you'll get the runway and support you need to be successful."

I don't know how many college sports fans are stuck with ADs who make them grind their teeth, but I think Illinois fans will be happy for a long time. Fingers crossed.

People think Brad is about to leave when he has a five star point guard lined up to join what should be a loaded roster next year. At his age? Come on now.
Well, the 5-star PG could follow him to wherever he ends up.

I'm not saying he's leaving for this job, and the age certainly is a factor that hopefully helps us along with I assume Brad has to be thrilled that Tyler was able to coach right with him and be promoted here, but also get the some of the same vibes of Bill Self putting his name out for Arkansas and other jobs even before he ends up going to KU. It's not like there weren't the same rumors last offseason about BU and Texas and such. Nobody should assume he's just staying at Illinois until he retires. Maybe he does, great, but I'd say that's far from a done deal.

Hope it's just BU being smart to maximize his next raise at Illinois.

But it certainly adds another layer to this whole stretch while we're trying to figure out next year's Illini roster, and players like Ty and Luke trying to figure out what's best for them, if the coach also is trying to figure out what's best for him, how could Ty and Luke know for sure what's best for them.....crazy time for everyone, fans included.

He could, but to Manhattan Kansas? I am not worried at all. That ship sailed when they went after tang imo.
