Educated guess. Cheater felt his recruits had earned their chances and wasn't happy that we were recruiting transfers over them. Maybe not the first time he's felt this way. So he's tired of it and leaves and now his guys will transfer out, too (i.e., that's the "what's going to follow" part).

The coaching equivalent of "creative differences" breaking up a band.

Bark twice if I'm in Milwaukee.

I’d imagine there is a real bond built between a recruiter and player. Any slight against your recruit especially if they are carrying the EDG mantra would likely feel like a slight also towards you. I see it as him going to bat for his guys that he likely believes earned some more opportunities and may not see eye to eye. All conjecture on my part.
I find this stuff so interesting, and in this case this sort of behavior does seem a bit like loving one member of FamILLy more than others.

Best of luck to Chester and Amani, whatever his fate may be.

Honest question, if Chester wasn’t an Illinois guy, would we even care that he was leaving? It’s not like his recruits have been awesome for us. I like Chester and this pains me to say, but I think he is VERY replaceable.

I thought UNC "settling" for Hubert Davis a few years ago would blow up in their face...
Still probably too early too say with Davis. His teams have been built around guys Roy brought in(Manek was a very nice get though).

Can't complain much about a 3 year stretch with a final four run and a 1 seed but hasn't really proven he can build a roster yet. Weber was more successful in his first 3 years and then it ran out once Self's guys left.

Honestly probably too soon on Scheyer too but I'll give him credit that he's carried over and continued to do a great job recruiting freshman though he probably needs to adjust and start adding veteran guys in the portal. Also, two years of talented team but they have been so damn soft and the Elite 8 run would not have happened if Shead didn't get injured.

Maybe someday we get the real scoop. IMHO felt like he was pretty good at motivating, but not sure what else beyond that. Bring back OA

I am not privy enough to know why, but it's been made clear by a lot of people on here in the know that as long as Whitman is our AD, Dee will never be back in any official capacity.
I’d never actually heard this.

Dee tweets positively about the Illini program all the time I wouldn’t have suspected any bad blood.

I actually forgot Whitman was on campus for three years with Dee first as a law student then as an assistant to Guenther.

Josh has always struck me as an extremely reasonable guy I’d be fascinated to know what happened here.

I find it a bit weird that assistants get upset if "their" recruits get recruited over. Seems un-EDG, not team oriented, selfish, etc.
There is a probably a balance in their somewhere but I don't think you can really complain about a coach being loyal to guys they brought in and developed since they were freshman.

Obviously they have to compete and earn their time but I can see being upset if youre bringing in a bunch of guys and a highly recruited guy you built a relationship with us getting buried as the 10th guy on the roster.

I definitely could see how that would be irritating. You spend countless hours getting a teenager to come and play basketball at your school just for them to get relegated to the end of the bench.

Only reason Amani was buried was back issues that plagued him much of the season. That certainly hampered his development some and his ability to develop chemistry with the team. Certainly not his fault.

What did Dee do to burn the bridge?
All I’ve got to go by is some posts here that were a bit cryptic but I got the impression it was some inappropriate behavior for someone of his position. Not going to add to that without first hand knowledge.

It's never been definitively explained on this board by those in the know, even though it's clear that something significant happened... and it's probably best left that way TBH.
