What terrible timing for this … if we had an opening earlier in the carousel we could have potentially landed a much higher profile replacement

Yeah that’s the best!…Kentucky fans proclaiming they’re now Indiana…and saying Louisville now has a better coach than them. Lol-priceless!
But, this UKCats12-cat, must of been head of his or her class. This person actually gets it:

Wow! I didn’t know that reasonable UK fans existed. This person might have the highest IQ in the state.

There's a way in which coaching carousel season always becomes this referendum on which fans have been good little boys and girls who have eaten their vegetables and done their homework on time which is really eye-rolly and tiresome IMHO.

Coaching searches are chaos and anything can happen to anybody. An inherently volatile and unpredictable process.

Mark Pope is a name I have heard a number of times the last couple of days-I do think they land one of their top 3 guys though
my 3 UK friends are in agreement that he is who ends up being the next UK coach......he's an alum and his BYU teams play an up tempo style of BB............Just what I have heard and they are connected to the UK grapevine's inner circle...........

post # 449 of previous closed thread.....Tuesday @ 10:08 am....looks like they got it right.............They really really did........

I'd say Yaklich is a pretty elite replacement ... If that's truly who it wound up being ...
That would be a great hire in a vacuum, but it would stink that we push for an opening in order to get Boynton reunited with BU and then not only does the timing get screwed up but he ends up at Michigan and we still wind up with the vacancy we didn't truly want.

I just need this coaching carousel stuff to be over with so I don't have to worry about Brad leaving

Just my opinion, but the one job that I could have seen Underwood leaving for is very likely closed. I get it - never say never - but last night took me from 90% to 99% certain Brad Underwood will coach Illinois next season (and likely beyond).

Hard to believe that all they could get is Pope. Is this a situation where the AD just makes a really bad impression on people, as we saw with Thomas? Is it that he didn't really conduct a serious search beyond big names he thought Kentucky would surely be able to get? I think, in comparison, this is a bigger whiff than us ending up with Groce. Maybe it will work out, but goodness, USC can get Musselman and a bona fide blue blood is taking guys who weren't even on a reasonable list of likely candidates. OOF!

While I don't think Pope is the home run hire Kentucky wanted. I don't think it's terrible. He's been coaching with at least one hand tied behind his back at BYU. Players aren't supposed to drink, smoke, have sex, etc.. due to the religion of the school and hes still made the tourney. I dont think theyll be getting the high 5 star kids at Kentucky, but we've seen that doesn't work these days anyway. If Kentucky still gives Pope the NIL money I think he'll be successful even though he's not a sexy hire. Still funny to see them melt down though.

The problem with Pope is whether he can get out of gate and win. If not, he is going to get lots of pressure very quickly and the current AD might not even be around to protect him by the time. He does have a little bit of protection as an alum.

What’s the number of Loyalty posters guffawing at UK right now that have Roger Powell Jr. at the top of their “Next Illinois Coach” list? It’s not zero, I know that.
Very true, though to my point about Pope not exactly being the cultural embodiment of Kentucky basketball I was trying to think of a comparison for us.

What if the solid-but-not-spectacular coach of like, San Jose State were Damir Krupalija?

Are we feeling like we've recaptured the essence of what Illinois Basketball means?

Let's hope the recent track records of Ewing, Juwan, Woodson, etc. have diminished some of the shine of that old, wistful, nostalgic, but never fully tenable argument.
