While I don't think Pope is the home run hire Kentucky wanted. I don't think it's terrible. He's been coaching with at least one hand tied behind his back at BYU. Players aren't supposed to drink, smoke, have sex, etc.. due to the religion of the school and hes still made the tourney. I dont think theyll be getting the high 5 star kids at Kentucky, but we've seen that doesn't work these days anyway. If Kentucky still gives Pope the NIL money I think he'll be successful even though he's not a sexy hire. Still funny to see them melt down though.
I don't know what "etc..." comprises; however, strict denial of the foregoing three pastimes in males 17-early-20-ish would seem to... how shall I put this... channel a certain energy and focus (even a certain amount of fury) into their basketball playing.

Regarding Pope, my comparison to Groce was a lot more about the fact that he was not really in UK's top three choices. Their fanbase expected that coaches of all caliber would be sprinting to take the job. UK fans are incredibly underwhelmed by the hire in the same way we mostly were with Groce.

It's especially damning for UK fans because they've been begging for Cal to leave for two years due to lack of tournament success, and then they replaced him with a guy who's never won a tournament game. There's certainly cause to hire him with the UK legacy and all, but there's no doubting what happened here: they shot for the moon and hit the Rocky Mountains.
I think the thing that surprises me a little is how publicly this whole process has played out (esp. with Drew)....usually , by the time the news leaks that whoever is being offered the job....that person has been offered and has verbally accepted the position....and the only thing left is the signing of a contract....kind of surprises me that even with social media... that the powers to be at Kentucky aren't keeping info closer to the cuff

Hard to believe that all they could get is Pope. Is this a situation where the AD just makes a really bad impression on people, as we saw with Thomas? Is it that he didn't really conduct a serious search beyond big names he thought Kentucky would surely be able to get? I think, in comparison, this is a bigger whiff than us ending up with Groce. Maybe it will work out, but goodness, USC can get Musselman and a bona fide blue blood is taking guys who weren't even on a reasonable list of likely candidates. OOF!
I think the timing of the search really hurt Kentucky. Perhaps they could have landed Muss if he wasn't already off the board. Plus, as others have mentioned, the changing landscape of CBB coupled with the (unrealistic) expectations at UK make this job less desirable that it was in the olden days.

I was thinking to myself how psychotic and crazy Kentucky fans have come across here, and it got me wondering if a program as far down from us as we are from Kentucky (say, Minnesota or something) would look at our fan base and think we are crazy as hell. And while I landed on the answer of "kind of" (we are pretty crazy, after all) ... I honestly think UK are just in another stratosphere.

Sorry, guys... searching old thread and this one and can't find it for some reason (may be blind, idk) - which assistant are we possibly losing?

We're absolute lunatics and one significant way in which we are similar to BBN is that we've been very online since the beginning of that being a possibility. Kentucky is #1 in sheer volume of keyboard warriors and always has been, and we have always punched way above our weight. Both are also more recruiting minutae-focused than average, often caring more about the ups and downs of the recruit rumor mill than actual games being played (though the whole sport is becoming less like that, thankfully).

Still, all college fanbases have broadly similar tics to them, they're all "delusional".

I have always chuckled at the "Whining Illini" moniker we get elsewhere. The sheer volume of things we're complaining about at any given time is pretty remarkable. And we're definitely really, really bad about creepy weirdos in the replies of teenage recruits social media posts. Again, hopefully that era of CBB is fading a bit.

We're also unusually mean to each other. I loved that tweet with the top online rivalries in college basketball and one of the top ones was Illinois vs Illinois.

(One thing we're not and I'm glad we're not is cult-like. We're not like Texas A&M where there's like a whole cosmology and ritualistic practice and fans compete over who is the most pious and personally connected to the inner sanctum. We're a bunch of yahoos lobbing hot takes from our Peoria basements and that's a good thing.)

I don't think anyone has dropped a name, or the school that they're interviewing at

One name I've heard could be a target if we had an opening: Luke Yaklich ...

Isn't Yaklich a great defensive coach? He was highly thought-of at Texas. UIC is just a tough goddamn job. At least DePaul you have some built-in history and a shiny new arena, even if it is off campus.
Sherrell Ford is not walking through that door.

I don’t think a guy with Pope’s resume should be anywhere close to the Kentucky job. This is as bad as IU hiring Mike Woodson

I am still convinced he will be a star. Unfortunate year to be sure, but I believe there were injuries plus a key recruit backing out last minute. It will be interesting to see how they do this year.

That's just it. How much better is this job than the other basketball only powerhouses?

You're now facing Cal, Pearl, Barnes, Beard & Oats. And the tier 2 of Buzz, Paris, & Golden aren't shabby either.

When Cal joined UK you had Pearl, Donovan with maybe Stansberry & Grant as a tier 2. It was a pushover league.

That coupled with the insane fanbase, is it worth it for an extra 1-2M in NIL & contract dollars?
From a coaching salary perspective, we know that dealing with BBN brings a cost above $1.5 million or somewhere around +20% (give or take). Calipari set that market rate when he left the BBN hysteria and took a big pay cut to go to Arkansas. If you think about it that way, Pope getting $5.5 mil/year is a relative pittance for what he'll have to deal with.

The nice thing about BBN is that they make all other fanbases, even one as crazy as ours, look like masters of Zen.

Antigua decided to take the guaranteed salary at Arkansas and stay with Cal rather than wait it out with Pope and other teams …

Chin is going to Arkansas … Short ties are already packed … 💀😂
SO............. Indy, in your well connected opinion, what does this do to our chances with Storr now that Chin is at a place with what seems like endless NIL availability?

I know all of you guys (insiders) are very confident and I am sure that is the case, just wondered if this new wrinkle with Chin headed to ARK changes anything.
