I was thinking to myself how psychotic and crazy Kentucky fans have come across here, and it got me wondering if a program as far down from us as we are from Kentucky (say, Minnesota or something) would look at our fan base and think we are crazy as hell. And while I landed on the answer of "kind of" (we are pretty crazy, after all) ... I honestly think UK are just in another stratosphere.
Illini fans are absolutely insane but relatively self-aware & significantly more knowledgeable about the college basketball landscape than most fanbases

Woodson literally coached in the nba
and not like 2 or 3 seasons where his teams sucked (hi eric musselman), Woodson was a HC for 9 full seasons, making the playoffs 5 of those seasons (plus an NBA assistant for, what, 15+ years?). Not saying that automatically makes him a good college coach, but the bona fides were there

We're absolute lunatics and one significant way in which we are similar to BBN is that we've been very online since the beginning of that being a possibility. Kentucky is #1 in sheer volume of keyboard warriors and always has been, and we have always punched way above our weight. Both are also more recruiting minutae-focused than average, often caring more about the ups and downs of the recruit rumor mill than actual games being played (though the whole sport is becoming less like that, thankfully).

Still, all college fanbases have broadly similar tics to them, they're all "delusional".

I have always chuckled at the "Whining Illini" moniker we get elsewhere. The sheer volume of things we're complaining about at any given time is pretty remarkable. And we're definitely really, really bad about creepy weirdos in the replies of teenage recruits social media posts. Again, hopefully that era of CBB is fading a bit.

We're also unusually mean to each other. I loved that tweet with the top online rivalries in college basketball and one of the top ones was Illinois vs Illinois.

(One thing we're not and I'm glad we're not is cult-like. We're not like Texas A&M where there's like a whole cosmology and ritualistic practice and fans compete over who is the most pious and personally connected to the inner sanctum. We're a bunch of yahoos lobbing hot takes from our Peoria basements and that's a good thing.)
I don’t even live in Peoria, but when I joined this Board, I rented a basement there … thought it was a requirement. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Maybe it’s just because I’m used to Loyalty (which I’m sure is more tepid than most forums), but I always got the impression we weren’t too horrible to one another…anytime I’ve taken a cursory glance at other fan forums, they are absolutely vicious to one another. I’m sure it’s probably a different story in the twittersphere.

We have a few "sky is falling" members and a few "orange kool-aid" members. The rest of us are typical bipolar manic depressive people who think we are going to win the NCAA after every win and go winless for rest of season after every loss. Dan does a pretty good job of moderating. SPAM / crazy posters get deleted plus you always have the ignore button. This board is a fun way to share the Illini cameraderie. Especially for those of us far away (I am in SoCal) so not a lot of Illini fans here. Of course when the team stunk the board was much less fun.

There are also fanbases where today would be all about complimenting someone on the sternly worded letter to the editor they wrote complaining about how Gurt Funderson of the Galesburg Telegraph-Sentinel had Morez Johnson 3rd on his Mr. Basketball ballot.

I'm also glad we aren't like that.

The problem with Pope is whether he can get out of gate and win. If not, he is going to get lots of pressure very quickly and the current AD might not even be around to protect him by the time. He does have a little bit of protection as an alum.
A little protection, but not Juwan Howard level protection. I don't wish him ill, I actually hope he does okay...not great...just okay...like, okay enough to beat Satan.

I'm holding down the fort in Knoxville. I'm thankful southerners are sweet people because I can see the gears twitch in their brain when they see me wearing the incorrect (and far less obnoxious) shade of orange

Anyone remember "Merrymen"? Lol, I actually used to prefer the Scout forums to Loyalty (I know...) simply because the same username could post on other teams' message boards, but that board became a negative cesspool in the late Weber years, and it never recovered (JMO). I'd occasionally read it when we got good again, and they all just seemed miserable. I have yet to see a message board anywhere that comes close to Illinois Loyalty ... it's awesome. Don't even get me started on Mizzou's board that looks like it's a SUBPAR board from 1997!

I also just feel really lucky that we have a great online presence. It would be kind of depressing if you were a huge Ohio State basketball fan and even in years where you had a top 15 team, there really was VERY little chatter online to share in the fandom with.

It helps(?) that because of the mixed bag of success the last 20 years most of us Illini fans are graduates and close family of grads.

UK has a LOT of ..locals as fans.

To give credit where it is due, I think that Dan's thoughtful monitoring of the Loyalty forum has much to do with its relative civility. Plus, at heart, we share a common bond in our love of the Orange and blue. Ultimately, we are the "every day guys" (and girls!) of all of the "elite" fan forums!

I used to be on Scout as well but switched to loyalty ~ 2 years ago. Just not many people posting on Scout plus insiders here are better. Post game threads are the most entertaining.

The IlliniHQ board was the most toxic forum I have ever witnessed, in hindsight I'm shocked the News-Gazette allowed that.

I really believe that the "Weber Wars" really stoked a lot of that. I'll admit that I probably fed some of that, as I felt like Weber should have been let go after the 2010 season and got so mad when I'd see people try to defend him to the end days. I was getting tired of being mediocre - we were the college basketball version of today's Chicago Bulls where we'd sneak into the NCAA tournament every other year as a 7 to 10 seed, maybe eke out a first round win, and then get sacrificed to the 1 or 2 seed.

Of course, I wanted Ron Guenther to exit stage left and ended up with Mike Thomas, so maybe I should have stayed more quiet. :)
