Defensively ... Michigan was OK-to-good for the majority of Beilein’s tenure, ranking no lower than No. 94 and no higher than No. 34 during his first 10 years running the program ...

HOWEVER ... It wasn’t until he hired defensive specialist Luke Yaklich as an assistant in 2017 that the Wolverines transformed into one of the nation’s elite units on that end of the floor ...

In 2017-18, Michigan ranked third in the country in adjusted defensive efficiency. The next year ... Beilein’s last before his jump to the NBA ... Michigan ranked second.
But why male models?

Chester upset we recruited over Amani & Sencire. He brought in Jayden & Underwood and him butt heads….. It’s a running scenario.. Chet feels disrespected. Crappy situation.

What I can find:

He goes 214-173 coaching high school basketball (.553)

Gets hired at Illinois State as an assistant (went to school with Muller)
His last year at ISU is their 28-7 season

He gets hired at Michigan, has great two year run with JB. Is lead recruiter for one guy (4*, transferred after one year). Isn't retained by Howard.

Hired at Texas for COVID season (Shaka's penultimate season), ends up a slightly disappointing year for Longhorns but likely would have made the tournament

Gets the UIC head job but they are really bad under his tenure. Is fired after this season and leaves with second worst winning percentage in program history.

Love CF, but think this opens up a huge opportunity for Brad. Could Illinois Loyalty Game Thread take over as assistant coach? Brad will just put an IPad on the chair and read our in game adjustment suggestions.

1st & Daniel
If we’re poaching HC’s from irrelevant nothing type Chicago area programs how about the one with actual program ties that just went 25-5 as opposed to the one with a .402 win percentage in four seasons?

For clarity’s sake I’m not clamoring for either of these guys whatsoever I just don’t at all understand, defensive guru-dom not withstanding, why this particular guy would be or purportedly is, atop Brad’s list.

Elite 8 to this. We are an utter mess and IU and MI who were both in the dumpster have more momentum than us. WTH. This is on Brad!!! I will hold out hope but you just ran off an Illini favorite and his recruits. I’m sad regardless how this turns out.

Educated guess. Cheater felt his recruits had earned their chances and wasn't happy that we were recruiting transfers over them. Maybe not the first time he's felt this way. So he's tired of it and leaves and now his guys will transfer out, too (i.e., that's the "what's going to follow" part).

The coaching equivalent of "creative differences" breaking up a band.

Bark twice if I'm in Milwaukee.
That would be my take

Guys the majority of our good players are because of Tim Anderson. Let’s all calm down here. I’m sure whoever Brad hires will be just as good if not better then Chester.
Yeah I am super sad to see Chester leave man, but it does need to be contextualized that of all our current staff....not one of his specific recruits has been a high level producer for us at all. One could argue they never even got a shot to prove themselves (other than Epps) and in fact it seems that's how Chester felt.

This doesn't take into account how important he was in development/game planning but I'm not aware of how those duties were all split specifically.

UIC is an awful job ... So hard to be successful there ...

Is Yaklich a good recruiter?

I definitely wouldn't consider him an elite recruiter ... But he's an elite X&O guy ... Especially defensively ...

It would definitely mean TA would be carrying the load recruiting wise ...

I also mentioned this earlier today ... But there is potential to lose 2 assistants ... That is still on the table from what I've gathered ...

I’m shocked Chester would leave. IL is a better job than WVU and there’s no way they are paying him more than we could pay. I’m interested in who replaces him. Given that most of these guys just go to the highest bidder I hope we bring in the best coach possible bc recruiting relationships are overrated at this point.

Lateral move from what I've been told ... May get Associate HC title ...

Can't even lie to you guys ... This one is a little tough for me ... Wish C Fraz and Sarah nothing but the absolute best ...
I am heart broken. Great recruiter, person, and he's a Illini! Should have paid him in gold and begged. He wore the orange and blue for crying out loud!

Step off the ledge my friend. Losing our 2nd best assistant isn't the end of the world.

We lost Chin and Antigua in one off-season and ended up fine. Let's see what Josh and Brad can do.

Okay, this is promising. Let's look up how things went for him at Illinois State, Texas, and UIC for defense:

Illinois State average defensive ranking in previous season: 142
Illinois State with Yaklich: 89 + 80 + 44 + 73 + 19(!!!)

Texas average defensive ranking in previous season: 26
Texas with Yaklich: 24

UIC average defensive ranking in previous season: 115
UIC with Yaklich: 221 + 303(!) + 259 + 124

OA in comparison doesn’t stand a chance. I’m sure @Dan could get creative with how he doles out that assistant coach salary to the participants of the game thread 😂

If Nick Irvin could win games by 30, the game thread would win by 60…

Give him the athletes and talent we have ... You're going to see a top 25 defense ... Likely top 10 ...
