I'm honestly very curious about what happened with Kentucky. Did Cal just absolutely blindside them with the move?
You get a vague sense that Mitch Barnhart had a much more "keep it in the family" mentality both in terms of the heat of Cal's seat and the coaching search than the big donors and media elites in #BBN.

Cal's always been tight with the big boosters who were getting increasingly sick of him and knew that situation had a strong likelihood of getting ugly. I think he felt he was on some level doing UK a favor by relieving them of the buyout.

And then in terms of the search process, one of three things happened:

1. Barnhart had a shortlist with Mark Pope on it (along with probably Donovan and Drew), and Mark Pope said yes and there wasn't much more analysis done than that.
2. Barnhart wasn't willing to consider candidates who he didn't have a preexisting sense that they would "get" what the UK job is and means.
3. After a couple days of losing control of the narrative Barnhart just totally panicked.

None of those speak very well of him.

I think he had a list that we could all fill in. Unfortunately for him, the spot he was shopping just didn't have the appeal it once had. He got turned down more often than a Kentucky program had ever experienced.

So instead of getting someone out of the next tier (definitely embarrassing for BBN) he instead grabbed someone from even one tier below but who was part of BBN and then tries to convince BBN that this is actually what they should all want.

It's BS, but you can actually say it without stammering.

So "keep it in the family" is really "I hired someone in the family, don't be mad"

Quinn Snyder was a bad coach at Mizzou and looked like every coked out villain in an 80s movie and somehow failed upwards in the NBA... So it's possible

Quin Snyder won five tournament games in seven seasons at Missouri. He reached the AP top-5 in two different seasons. Him and Mike Anderson are the only two coaches to reach the regional final since 1975 while at Missouri. If you want to fault Quin for anything, it was he became disinterested in recruiting (was also poor timing on his part that Mizzou football started ascending at that time). Even then, the dude could flat out coach. In the those first three seasons they were pretty spicy and made the Arch a great game.

He never finished better than 5th in the Big 12.

They made the Elite 8 without beating a top 3 seed.

He coached when I was in school and I thought that Mizzou teams were pretty mediocre.

The popcorn dumped on his head by misery fans was not a good look...it really really wasn't....

Best seed was #6 one time. #8 or #9 the other times. Elite 8 as a #12 seed.

Cool story. What's your point?

If a team earns a No 1. seed, earning the 1 seed is support of the coach's ability.

My point is that using an Elite 8 appearance as a 12 seed where the bracket fell apart as proof of coaching ability is a very poor argument.

A guy who never finished higher than 5th in the Big 12 couldn't "flat out coach" at the time. He improved significantly since his time at Mizzou.

I’ve heard that TA is not too happy with the current setup. Are we going to be able to pony up the money this next year to keep him?
An underrated thing about "regular" jobs is not knowing what everyone else makes.

Is NOBODY happy? Does EVERYBODY feel disrespected? FFS
