Would Jeff Capel come back if Pitt fires him?

Pitt should fire him … But I don’t think they will …

They just gave him an extension in July … Buyout is giant … I got told they literally don’t have the money to fire him …

They need to be serious about resources if they wanna win more games …

17-20 wins a year with the occasional 22-25 win season is what they should expect …

Bingo … The top assistant spot at Duke is open …

Arguably the best assistant coaching job in the sport …
Sure glad we paid TA for a year of not destroying recruiting relationships, I'm sure he will continue that behavior as a Duke assistant.

Yes it would hurt anywhere he went, but Duke? You're going to make me root for Auburn in that Duke-Auburn final after all...dammit.

Woof. He’s been pretty underwhelming there and didn’t realize he got extended

Isn’t scheyer himself a Chicago guy too? So potentially three Duke coaches, including the head coach, with deep Chicago connections. That’s less than ideal.
2021 team Ayo and Adam Miller
2022 team - No Chicago starters
2023 team TSJ only
2024 team - TSJ only key -true Chicago player, Ty is from Michigan, Justin was role player who transferred in
2025 team - Morez only key - true Chicago player

Chicago one of many recruiting areas for Brad. Big change from past Illini great teams

1989 - Nick, Kenny, Marcus, Kendall, and Lowell were all Chicago area. Steve and Larry southern Illinois
2005 - Luther Dee, Roger, James were all Chicago area, James Kankakee Deron was TX

Where would UIUC basketball be without Ayo, and TSJ?

Adam could have been another major difference maker. I really hope Morez stays. I think we are just starting to see his abilities as the coaches figure out how to play him with Tomi. Unfortunately the time they can play together is limited due to the lack of a third true big man. I expect he will get significant minutes next year even if they bring in a big man transfer or two.

James was from New Lennox, not Kankakee. So also Chicago area, although more outlying suburb.

Russell Springman has been fired at Oral Roberts. Was only in his 2nd season at ORU, having been elevated to the job after former coach Paul Mills turned a Sweet 16 run into eventually getting the Wichita State job. Springman was 19-42 overall and 8-24 in the Summit League, having never finished above 8th in the conference.

Scott Spinelli has been fired after only one season in charge at Chicago State.

I deleted a bunch of your explanation, for the sake of space, I hope folks read your full comment. I note this, about the changes in hires, blame, and hopes for success:

When coaches (and even their poor, striving assistants) are paid zillions more than in years and decades past, and the loyalty-free transfer portal, and NIL payment scheme for players (yes, they deserve to be paid, shutup!), and the coach-speak we are subjected to creates these Frankensteinian teams -- with body parts sewn together with pig sinew and glued together by incantations of "eye of newt and wing of bat" -- leaves us frustrated? Well.

Don't be surprised at the losses.

Kings assistant and Florida State alum Luke Loucks has emerged as the leading candidate for the Florida State job with a deal expected to be completed this weekend. Loucks played at FSU from 2008-2012 and was part of the school's only ACC Tournament champion team in 2012.

I always find the “let’s hire the best available alum as coach” to be a strange way of finding the new guy , versus just finding the best guy

Lot of teams just going to get the best COACH available …

Hire a GM and assistants to handle all the player acquisition stuff …

Not a bad strategy …
Kinda like the BYU approach? They are not bad (or actually goood) so far this season.

If that happened, our situation with Morez reduces dramatically. If he had a chance to start at Duke and follow Anderson to boot......hard to imagine not taking that deal.

Obviously, a possibility isn't necessarily a reality.
I can see that happens. However I don't know why Duke necessarily must want Morez.

Because he's really good
I get it. They might be able to find better post players though. On the other, if Brad doesn't know how to use post players without 3 pt shooting...
