In the new world of NIL, how much do assistant coaches matter? Do NBA teams wring their collective hands over their assistants?

2021 team Ayo and Adam Miller
2022 team - No Chicago starters
2023 team TSJ only
2024 team - TSJ only key -true Chicago player, Ty is from Michigan, Justin was role player who transferred in
2025 team - Morez only key - true Chicago player

Chicago one of many recruiting areas for Brad. Big change from past Illini great teams

1989 - Nick, Kenny, Marcus, Kendall, and Lowell were all Chicago area. Steve and Larry southern Illinois
2005 - Luther Dee, Roger, James were all Chicago area, James Kankakee Deron was TX
Feel like the idea of basketball recruiting hotbeds is kind of over.

No doubt a lot of talent will still come out of areas but a lot of the top end talent get put into basketball prep schools fairly early.

As I suspect many of us here might agree, it likely depends on the relative strengths and weaknesses of the head coach, as well as the level and domain of responsibilities assigned to the assistants.

Unlike Brad Underwood Kevin Keatts actually made a Final 4 in 8 seasons at NC State. With less talent than Illinois and getting paid less money than Underwood . We beat Purdue, Michigan and Iowa and I knew that was going to satisfy the happy with mediocrity Illinois fan base. Now let’s celebrate finishing in 7th place in the Big Ten with two NBA first round draft picks. It’s time for Underwood to take a crap or get off the potty. Anything less than a Sweet 16 in the tournament Brad seat has to start getting warm. I don’t care about the meaningless Big Ten Tournament. NCAA Tournament success is what I care about.

IU coaching search update …

Hearing Mark Byington, Josh Schertz, Micah Shrewsberry, Ben McCollum …
Of those four, Byington all day for me, followed by McCollum and then Schertz close behind. I’d see a fan revolt if Shrewsberry is the choice. He’s just not shown a lot at Notre Dame.

What is the mood in Lincoln? I had Fred as super safe in his seat (with the team looking good for tourney appearance), but the team is in free fall and will not even make the BTT.

Quite remarkable two weeks there. Still think he is safe in his job, but is the seat getting warm heading into next year?

Nebraska is a tough job, can't see them pulling the plug

To me (and I don't know him or have all the facts, so I'm sure people will disagree), I am not a big fan of Izzo. Berated Illinois Admin for firing Weber--that's because he wanted Weber there for more beatings. Doing the same thing for Fran. Now, I realize he's developed relationships with these coaches, but I'll never believe he's 100% sincere.

Didn't he also mispronounce Ayo and KJ's names? Didn't care or show any respect (imo) to correct himself and moved on. He's upset because BU was 4 - 1 against him up until this year. Through the years, he's always been pouty and miserable on that sideline. Seems to always get the calls at home.

He's got a good team this year, and everything is hunky-dory. When things go great, the best guy ever!

I hope he loses early in the tournament.
