With the exception of 3 years in Italy and 4 years in Houston, I spent the bulk of my adult life living in snow country (NH, IL, OH, IN, AK, ND). By far the places I lived with the worst weather were in the Upper Midewest. If you watch the winter weather for Minneapolis, Detroit, & Chicago, they are usually colder than Anchorage, Alaska (I lived there for almost 17 years). The winters are longer in Anchorage, but the temps are worse in the upper Midwest. And while I loved my time in ND due to the outstanding bird hunting opportunities, my wife believes the state should be encircled with concertina wire and declared a buffalo preserve.
