What I am trying to figure out is where on the scale would "we have an elite staff" fit with “we’ve got the best staff in basketball” and “we’ve got a good staff here”. I am just having a hard time constructing a working model and quantifying these. Does anyone have a workable scale for those? /s

The scale moves depending on if we've won or lost our last game :ROFLMAO:

On the offense, I think Brad's "plan" is to recruit "dudes who can make plays". To his credit, he's pretty good at that. TSJ, Ayo, KJ, Will and others.

But there isn't much of a system. It's ISO and PnR and when good teams scheme to take that away or make it hard, we don't really have anything in the back pocket to counter with.

This is why it's been compared to Coach Cal's model.

After sitting back on things I get both sides of the table with Brad. Personally I don't want to see him go but if this entire staff comes back in same positions I am ready for him to go.

On Tyler I dont think he is the problem. The problem was the complete rebuild to going younger with talent but not the talent that was going to win now. Anyone who watched KJ highlights before he even came here should of known he was going to be a high turnover guy. That was obvious in everything that was seen from highlights and box scores. He wasn't coming here and turnovers weren't going to stop. The staff missed on way to many of the other pieces to go with the youth. When no ability to hit 3s even wide open it turns the offense into looking around and hoping. Couldn't really work inside because nobody really respected this team to shoot 3s.

On Hamer this guy is completely lost and has no clue what he is doing and doesn't need to be back at all. To many times his drop coverage ended up being burned and burned and burned. So many big games from the other team because left shooter wide open that actually make them. Sure easier in practice when your team can't make them than when in a game where other team can make them. Team was constantly burned on screen and roles. Not having a true defensive center hurt as well. Rez was the best on that side but he got called for some dumb fouls and his motor got him in foul trouble at times as well. This team while had the talent just wasn't going to be a strong defensive team to begin with but the scheme setup for them made them look worse.

On Brad this season wore on me a bit just got real tired of all the excuses. Sorry my guy but you built this roster that you had. Nobody to blame but yourself there. The well this team is young excuse at end of last game was just as bad. It was you who went and built this team on youth after saying need to stay older. Bright side with this is I believe brad knows his faults this year and will fix them with the roster.

Now time to get a few players back mainly to keep some structure and add some experienced older players to go in the mix with them and Dame. I love the international feel that's been coming in but need a better job of mixing that in and realize that international is great but also they don't play the physical style that's played here. Need a veteran PG who knows how to handle an offense and distribute without turning it over. Need a backup big because when foul trouble comes there is no one to play the spot. Need some 3pt makers and not just shooter like this team had. For the offense concept to work and for Dame to get what he needs going to have some real threats from 3 that can't just be left open. Get these things and a defensive minded coach that knows how to scheme a defense I believe Brad can make a second weekend at worst next season.

For Xavier … Chris Mack, Luke Murray & Alan Huss …

Chris Mack is the no brainer here …

In his 14 years as a head coach, Mack has been to the NCAA tourney 9 times … 9 of 13 minus COVID … Of those 9 he advanced to the second weekend 4 times …

When Mack was at Xavier, they went to the tourney 8 of his 9 seasons … They were in the second weekend 4 of those 8 seasons … Winning at least 1 game in the tourney in 6 of those 8 seasons …

Xavier sure does like to rehire coaches that have left. Devil you know I guess.

What do you want Brad to say ? Lol …

Let’s see what happens in the off season … Brad knows changes are needed …
@Indy Illini Fan Do you get the sense that in years past, BU has had a staff of assistants that weren't "yes" men? I think about the changes early in his tenure of moving on from the gambling defense and Spread offense. Ultimately, it's Brad's call, but seems like he had to have some direct input from X&O guys (Gentry, etc) to make the switch. Seems like a guy like Hamer wouldn't be that hard-headed when it comes to being adamant about suggesting changes. I have no knowledge of that whatsoever, but just the vibe I get.

Edit: Not grouping Geoff or OA in this as I've heard from a few people they are more than willing to tell Brad what they think...

Repping both for the meaning of the GIF and for finding a GIF with Eddie Redmayne in it. The guy is PHENOMENAL in "Day of the Jackal". He absolutely needs to be a future Bond movie villain.

A lot of the online chatter from Xavier fans I've seen is that they're not too happy with Sean using them to rehab his image and bolt for the first good opportunity shown his way. Seems like they want someone who doesn't see them as a stepping stone........wonder if Mack realizes how good he had it and would stay there long term.

Pretty impressive # of times to get to 2nd weekend. To be bad that's an unrealistic expectation (or so I'm told) for us to have here...

Why? Assistants leave schools all the time. Brad is his guy.....also we aren't giving anyone but OA money besides OA....but you don't have too. He will get compensated well if he comes here.
Look, I hope you are right, but Michigan had an objectively better year than we did by every measure and are still playing in the S16, despite that most of us felt like we had a better team

I very much hope Brad does convince him to jump for a lateral role, I don’t know why he would unless it’s a big step up in comp or he just feels our trajectory and NIL are higher - which they may be

I personally would be surprised if Xavier went the Mack route. Nothing against him, but their fans are pissed about Miller leaving them again and the fans do not want another repeat hire. Would seem to be a bit of a tone-deaf hire

Brad has reinvented himself multiple times

2017, 2018 - press trap defense
2019, 2020, 2021 post Kofi up, pick and roll
2022 - transfer portal starters -MM TSJ
2023 - More transfer portal MD, QG JH. Booty ball PG MD
2024 - Intl recruits - KJ, TI. 5 star freshman WR. 5 out.

Hopefully Brad will get together with OA and GA - review what worked and did not work. Go into portal and assistant coach hire to fix problems
- poor defense
- poor shooting
- too many turnovers
- players leaving after 1 year
- not strong enough

Not a fan of 5 out offense. It will hurt you recruiting bigs.
I get importance of everybody being able to shoot the 3. However if it means we are deficient in defense there must be tradeoffs. Why is it our 3 pg shooting was worst in country?

What happened to Mack at Louisville? Total crash and burn.
Seems like a lot of the issues stemmed around NCAA compliance, tempered with former Wake Forest coach Dino Gaudio attempting to blackmail/extort Mack.

Is Murray looking for head coaching jobs? If so, what would be the most realistic type of position for him to take? He's obviously well-regarded in the profession given his work with UConn's offense, so I would imagine he'd get a chance at a higher-level program than other first-time head coaches. Xavier seems like it would be a pretty big step. Would VCU be the type of program where he'd fit in? Providence if English moves on? Just curious . . .

he’s not our head coach’s son
Sports is littered with examples of how having a coach as a dad often leads to being a great coach. Most people never even think about the art of coaching until their playing days are done. People like Tyler have been watching, listening, and learning the job since they learned the game existed. He has probably never watched a game growing up that his dad wasn't busy dissecting and critiquing at a high level. This idea that he has only been out of college for a few years, so he doesn't have "experience", doesn't hold water with me. He's been gaining experience since he could bounce a ball. He didn't come to Illinois to play a lot of minutes. He was never the type of player who was going to have a professional basketball career in which he wore shorts during the games. He came to Illinois to major in coaching.
The proof is in the pudding regarding how effective his offensive concepts are. We scored plenty of points, even when we didn't make a bunch of 3's. We almost always got quality shots, when we didn't give the ball away. (freshmen are going to freshman)
Beyond that, his dad trusts him implicitly, so whether you like it or not, he's probably not going anywhere.
