An average of 22nd in the nation and a median of 23rd. Never worse than 49th. Are we contending that’s NOT a good defensive stretch? Because I feel like that’s pretty solid.
So our average from 2020 through 2023 was 18th in the country.

We can all admit last year was a train wreck. If you add in this year, our average finish is 27th.

And people on here are apoplectic about Underwood's defense.

Looked up some stats regarding Brad

He is 16-21 against top 25 opponents while Illinois is also in top 25 (including big ten teams)

6-14 against TOP 25 non conference opponents while at Illinois

0-3 at home against non conf top 25 teams

top 25 vs top 25 he is 5-8 in NON CONFERENCE

Thought this was a interesting stats as lately it feels he stuggles against top 25 non conference competition

This is it for me. There is a noticeable difference in how Trent's teams approached that side of the game vs how our last couple teams have approached it.

I don't have a problem with drop coverage. Don't think we need to be on line up line or anything but I need to see dudes leaving it all out on the court. And the only guys this year who I'd say did that consistently on that end were Kylan, Morez, and Jake.

One noticeable thing about that group with Trent and Ayo is they took so much pride in not being caught on screens and that's why the drop coverage was able to work. It was a lot of effort but also really good technique for how they got through screens both on and off the ball and you can see that's translated for Ayo to the NBA too. This year KJ especially but all of the guards really struggled with navigating screens and not getting picked off.

To me one of the biggest knocks I’ve had on Brad is his virtual 100% reliance on man to man. I really think a team should have some zone in its arsenal to use from time to time. Can save on fouls and also throw a monkey wrench into the opposing offense. It’s not a be all end all but the inflexibility bothers me. He seems to throw it out every once in a blue moon for like 5 possessions, deems that we can’t play it and then discards for rest of season.

Seems to me it’s another tool in a potential toolbox of strategies to use. But you have to use it some for it to be effective.
Similar to Bielema breaking out The Barge in the Citrus Bowl.

I'd rather be all-in on being a lock-down man-to-man team than spend extra time learning to play a mediocre zone as a wrinkle. We can't be lock-down at both.
We aren’t lock down on either. Might as well be half-a** on both.

6-14 against TOP 25 non conference opponents while at Illinois

Wanted to look up these teams because it feels like Underwood isn't just seeking out top 25 teams, but top 10 teams, which would make this record pretty respectable. Here are the non-conference ranked opponents since joining Illinois (in regular season):

#3 Gonzaga (neutral) L
#21 Arizona (road) L
#2 Baylor (neutral) L
#10 Duke (road) W
#11 Arizona (home) L
#8 UCLA (neutral) W
#16 Virginia (neutral) L
#2 Texas (neutral) W
#4 Marquette (home) L
#11 Florida Atlantic (neutral) W
#17 Tennessee (road) L
#8 Alabama (road) L
#19 Arkansas (neutral) W
#1 Tennessee (home) L
#3 Duke (neutral) L

Eight of these games are top-10, with six (!!) being top-four ranked teams. Two of the three "worst" ranked teams ended up being a 1-seed and a 2-seed.

There's definitely a discrepancy between non-con and conference defensive efficiency. If I remember correctly, we finished around 100 for defensive efficiency last year when looking after Jan 1, and this year we were in the 60s based on my last recollection. It's not that our overall defensive metrics are terrible, it's that we have dropped off precipitously the last two years once we've been scouted and show regression once we get into the conference season.

1. Always had in this century except 2011. Even during the 1990s, the NBA has been style over substance. Plus Nico Harrison is a moron.
2. I am not basketball guys, but yeah defense is a much bigger issue. Heck even in the game where Oregon got curb-stomped, the Illini still allowed 77 points.
3. Illinois does play at high pace. I'll get that Trapezoid thing later.

This cuts both ways. The Illini leading the Big Ten in ppg is bit misleading, they play at higher pace than the rest of B1G. It is like USC Trojans leading the Big Ten passing yards last season. However the games where "bad Illini" show up, it looks even worse than from a slower pace team because the Illini are having turnovers and missing shots more often

BTW this explains that Trapezoid thing

Ryan Hammer is a GREAT follow for any general college basketball nerd btw (instagram > X)
