He played there and had his first coaching gig there. It's a homecoming of sorts.Seems like he could have done better than that. Penn hasn’t been relevant in basketball for quite some time, even if those stretches were pretty good. Does he have any connections / history there? Maybe just wants a lower pressure job?
Edit: I see he is a Wharton grad, and played there. Still seems an odd choice.
If he has to bring Harris and Hansberry along with him let's keep him away. I'd prefer being done with recruiting mediocrity.I think it's more an issue with Brad than his alma mater.
This isnt an accurate assessment. Scheyer wasn't groomed. He was selected bc Coack K still wants control over the program to a certain extent. This isn't conjecture either. There was a faction within the Duke world that wanted someone more proven. He's been at the school for less than one calendar year. Has he even been offered an assistant's position from the coach he just worked under? What does has be paid? What has he accomplished?
Scheyer was groomed by Coach K to take that program over. He actually did pay his dues at the school he played at as a player and was an assistant at, for multiple years, as a coach.
What has Frazier done for West Virginia outside of bring over mediocre players on a non tournament team? What's his value as a coach at the high D1 level? Putting in his dues, if we loved the state of West Virginia, would be to wait to see if Marshall opens up and apply. A few years of success there, THEN he will have paid his dues.
I believe Matt Painter did that at Purdue with Gene Keady. He left SIU after one year and was an assistant at Purdue during Keady's final season and took the reigns the next year. Not Illinois related, but sounds like Alan Huss might be going back to Creighton as the coach in waiting to McDermott. Don’t think I’ve seen that happen before from a sitting head coach
Does anyone think Chester would come back to the alma mater or has that ship sailed?
Tim Jankovich did that, too. He left the ISU Redbirds (as head coach) to become SMU's associate head coach and coach-in-waiting. Took over for Larry Brown in 2016.I believe Matt Painter did that at Purdue with Gene Keady. He left SIU after one year and was an assistant at Purdue during Keady's final season and took the reigns the next year.
Keady was quite a bit older than McDermott when he retired though. McDermott is only 60, two years younger than Brad. Keady was 68 when he stepped down.
Ok, let's get back to reality, avoid the word salad and just stare facts with regards to Chester versus Scheyer and putting in their dues. You could have copied and pasted this, just as I am:This isnt an accurate assessment. Scheyer wasn't groomed. He was selected bc Coack K still wants control over the program to a certain extent. This isn't conjecture either. There was a faction within the Duke world that wanted someone more proven.
I love this idea and think Illinois should bring Sean Miller here as coach-in-waiting. If he says no, Bryan Hodgson, come on down!I believe Matt Painter did that at Purdue with Gene Keady. He left SIU after one year and was an assistant at Purdue during Keady's final season and took the reigns the next year.

Behind ... pushingWhere do we stand with Hamer?
Haters gonna hateIf he has to bring Harris and Hansberry along with him let's keep him away. I'd prefer being done with recruiting mediocrity.
They like how inexpensive he ishow is hamer still not fired
I like Harris and Hansberry. Every team needs role players. If he has to bring Harris and Hansberry along with him let's keep him away. I'd prefer being done with recruiting mediocrity.
Until we see what happens to Ben, Booth, Ty, Dra, Jake Davis, and Jason we don't need to add more role players. If we want great results we should want great transfers, not "meh they take minutes" guys, when we currently have too many.I like Harris and Hansberry. Every team needs role players.
Next to the moving van in his driveway, I hope.Where do we stand with Hamer?
Points taken on both sides of the Sencire / Amani debate, regarding the value propositions they bring vs. the level Illinois should expect.Until we see what happens to Ben, Booth, Ty, Dra, Jake Davis, and Jason we don't need to add more role players. If we want great results we should want great transfers, not "meh they take minutes" guys, when we currently have too many.
Fran may do this. Why not.Illinois wants to be Elite, so let's get some good players, become a top team and do not shy away from a "risky" away game. Let's give Fran a Q1 opportunity!
Illinois vs. Penn at the Palestra in '25.
Penn vs. Illinois in Champaign in '26.
He has nothing to lose at all, especially the game in Champaign. Why not take a Q1 opportunity. Wonder if BU would do it, though.Fran may do this. Why not.
His reasoning was he never had a head coaching job before. That applies to Scheyer whether you agree or not. To say he brought mediocre players to a non tournament team is misleading. He brought 2 starters to a team that got screwed. Let's at least be honest. He's been at the school for less than one calendar year. Has he even been offered an assistant's position from the coach he just worked under? What does has be paid? What has he accomplished?
