He played there and had his first coaching gig there. It's a homecoming of sorts.

Not Illinois related, but sounds like Alan Huss might be going back to Creighton as the coach in waiting to McDermott. Don’t think I’ve seen that happen before from a sitting head coach

Scheyer was groomed by Coach K to take that program over. He actually did pay his dues at the school he played at as a player and was an assistant at, for multiple years, as a coach.

What has Frazier done for West Virginia outside of bring over mediocre players on a non tournament team? What's his value as a coach at the high D1 level? Putting in his dues, if we loved the state of West Virginia, would be to wait to see if Marshall opens up and apply. A few years of success there, THEN he will have paid his dues.

This isnt an accurate assessment. Scheyer wasn't groomed. He was selected bc Coack K still wants control over the program to a certain extent. This isn't conjecture either. There was a faction within the Duke world that wanted someone more proven.

I believe Matt Painter did that at Purdue with Gene Keady. He left SIU after one year and was an assistant at Purdue during Keady's final season and took the reigns the next year.

Keady was quite a bit older than McDermott when he retired though. McDermott is only 60, two years younger than Brad. Keady was 68 when he stepped down.

Tim Jankovich did that, too. He left the ISU Redbirds (as head coach) to become SMU's associate head coach and coach-in-waiting. Took over for Larry Brown in 2016.

Ok, let's get back to reality, avoid the word salad and just stare facts with regards to Chester versus Scheyer and putting in their dues. You could have copied and pasted this, just as I am:

Chester Frazier was at West Virginia for one season.

John Scheyer(on top of having played at Duke):
  • 2013-2014: Scheyer joined the Duke staff as a special assistant in April 2013, following the resignation of assistant coach Chris Collins.

  • 2014-2018: He was promoted to a full assistant coach on April 18, 2014.

  • 2018-2022: After the departure of associate head coach Jeff Capel, Scheyer was promoted to co-associate head coach along with Nate James.

  • 2021: Scheyer served as acting head coach for Duke's game against Boston College on January 6, 2021, when Krzyzewski was quarantined due to COVID-19.

  • 2022: Scheyer was named Duke's next head coach after Krzyzewski's retirement, officially taking the position in April 2022

  • 2022-Present: Scheyer is currently the head coach of the Duke men's basketball team.
I think that we can see the difference and why comparing Chester, who I really like, at West Virginia and Scheyer at Duke. Yes, Scheyer paid his dues at Duke.

I love this idea and think Illinois should bring Sean Miller here as coach-in-waiting. If he says no, Bryan Hodgson, come on down!

Points taken on both sides of the Sencire / Amani debate, regarding the value propositions they bring vs. the level Illinois should expect.

But I mean Sencire was the top ranked Ohio recruit and Amani was the top ranked Maryland recruit, right on the heels of Podz as Wisconsin Mr. Basketball. I don't know how you fault Chester for going after those levels of players, especially in the pre-portal era.

His reasoning was he never had a head coaching job before. That applies to Scheyer whether you agree or not. To say he brought mediocre players to a non tournament team is misleading. He brought 2 starters to a team that got screwed. Let's at least be honest.
