Groce by all accounts is a good, not great coach.

I would love to be wrong, but I don’t think him landing a Jalen Brunson/Quin Snider/Cliff Alexander does anything more than a quick tournament exit.

You’ve seen how BU can build this program, I just don’t think Groce has the chops to do the same at a power conference school.
He was out of eligibility by the time John Groce took over our program.

Short of a last-second shot over a 12 seed in this year’s NCAA tournament getting Maryland to the Sweet 16, is there really a lot to prove Kevin Willard is going to tear it up at Villanova?

I’m not saying Collins absolutely would have torn it up at Villanova. But given the hand he consistently has to play relative to the rest of the conference, I’m not convinced he would be a bad fit at a program like Villanova, Creighton, or many of the other non-UConn Big East programs.

Woh idk about that he didn’t fully explore his COVID year.
Quentin Snider would probably have been a better fit though.
Brunson is an absolute superstar who has done nothing but win, everywhere he goes. He probably would have saved Groce's job for another 4 years.
I would argue that would’ve been more detrimental to the program in general if he only bought groce another 4 years.

Point remains the same. Groce was not a single recruit away from having good teams. His best finish being his first year in the program is a huge indicator of the type of coach he was.

The case for Kevin Willard depends on the extent to which you buy Seton Hall as one of the most difficult jobs in the country.

I don't really have a strong opinion either way on that.

I'm not sure about Kevin Willard either, but he did raise a couple Big East banners at Seton Hall, so I think there's a stronger argument he can win at a good Big East program than there is for Collins winning at a better Big Ten job, or even with Nova. His ability to compete for conference titles is entirely speculative.

Not even remotely true. BU's record vs. Collins is 11-5. If you take out those two first seasons where BU was building things up, it looks even better at 11-3.

Why wouldn't I? First, more success at every single coaching stop he's had. Second, since you love the head-to-head, he has a .688 winning percentage against him. And then, Collins has also had momentum before and failed to capitalize. At one point he had two straight 20-win seasons in 2016-17 and 2017-18, making the tournament in the latter. That's a program on the rise you can sell to recruits, right? How did he build on that? With 5 straight losing seasons. Then he finally turned things around again, making the tournament 2 straight years and then...16-15.

He's a fine coach for what that job is, but there's a reason major programs aren't banging down his door. I'm not even saying the reason is that he's bad. The reason is that he hasn't really shown anything. He's worked at one of the few high-major programs where losing is actually OK, and the where you can be celebrated for simply not losing sometimes. If you want to hire a guy who is going to win, you just don't know if he gives you that, and you also gotta wonder why he's stuck with Northwestern for so long and hasn't tried to go somewhere that actually cares about winning championships.
To each his own I guess. It is an apples to oranges comparison in that Collins has been somewhat successful at a school with no history of success and no resources, while BU has restored Illinois to somewhat below Henson era success and well below Kruger/Self/early Weber era success with Top 10 level resources. Let me put it this way...if both BU and Collins had the same roster and played 10 times, I think Collins would win 8 out of 10

This is your reminder that Henson at Illinois won just one conference title in 21 seasons, and missed out on the tournament 43% of the time.
and well below Kruger/Self/early Weber era success
Kinda relieved you didn't include Groce in there. Kruger never made a 2nd weekend before he bounced btw. Also a worse conference record than BU. Weber did great until he had to bring in players of his own, at which point the program was in a far worse place than it has been under BU.

with Top 10 level resources.
As I've said elsewhere, I think we should all be skeptical about this claim. Everyone says it, but I've yet to see any reason at all to believe it.

I believe you do think this, but there is absolutely no reason to, and if there was a legitimate basis to think this, Collins would be coaching Duke right now, not NW.

Didn't really know where else to put this one, but if you have a subscription to The Athletic you have to read this story on the late Amir Abdur-Rahim. Fantastic coach, and clearly a better human being who left us far too soon.

Just read it what an excellent read...... to quote the old song classic "Only the Good Die Young"
