Yeah there’s not lot of examples but generally sons aren’t as good as the fathers. The exception being Tony Bennett was better than Dick Bennett.

Bob Knight > Pat Knight
Rick Pitino > Richard Pitino
Lon Kruger > Kevin Kruger

Am I missing anyone recent or famous?

Even just assistants inheriting major programs is spotty.

Scheyer worked out.
I think Hubert Davis has been mostly a failure
Kyle Neptune was a gigantic failure
If we're including coaches that were anointed by the previous HC via last minute retirement:
Greg Gard pretty good
Bill Guthridge bad
Ron Sanchez bad

Football is just as iffy:
Lincoln Riley - Incomplete
Ryan Day - Success
Bill Snyder's replacements- Failure x 2

In the father and son category, could add

Ray Meyer and Joey Meyer at DePaul: Ray the legend, Joey did very well for quite a while, but then tailed off badly and was fired.

Didn't want to read the whole thread, so ignore if previously stated. Could this same situation happen here? Don't kill me for this, just asking! lol.

Imagine not only having to deal with the pressure of being "the ex coaches son", you also have to deal with trying to recruit, as your dad is on TV speaking or voting, in ways some recruits/handlers might take as racist or bigotry or whatever. Coaches jumping into politics is one thing, a son trying to fill his Dads shoes, as well as dealing with whatever/if any backlash and controversy, his dad may be causing, is something we don't see often. Should be interesting in today's world.

I'm fairly certain our administration wouldn't let this happen but BU better not get any ideas....also I guess if I'm Steven I'm happy I have a great gig but this isn't how I want to get my first HC job.
Well. I thought about that but at least that means Brad will retire here...

If BU did what Bennett did so that OA could be head coach for a season, and OA turned around and led a talented team to a terrible 15-17 season you'd be livid, and rightfully so. Bennett was at Virginia for 15 years and his last act was to screw over the Athletic Department, the players, and the fans. If that's not bum behavior, I don't know what is.
He didn't want to deal with NIL/portal, the new era. That's much better than the agenda from Pearl.

We will all riot if Tyler Underwood ever becomes coach. Not happening....EVER.....I would take Kevin Krueger before TU
I don't agree. If Tyler leaves for a while, builds his resume to the point that he looks ready for the position and the position becomes available, great! If he is suddenly HC after Dad retires in September 2 years from now? That would be a cause for MAJOR concern.

And he couldn't have figured that out six months earlier?

It wasn't the decision to retire people have a problem with, it was the timing. And the reason for the timing was the same for both guys - to force the program to go with their preferred replacement.

This board really likes to work itself into a lather over hypotheticals. 🤪😵‍💫

We went through this in the 2010s. Illinois is not a program where some novice first time coach gets his turn at it. That nonsense might be okay at Auburn but not here. We expect better. Whenever the time comes for BU to step down or leave, I would expect a national coaching search to yield a really good veteran or up and coming candidate from the mid major level. At least Antigua is here if something odd ever happened with Underwood

I forgot about the timing of Wright's retirement and you are probably right about it. It seems like this is becoming a trend... Not that it matters but Wright has more right than Pearl to screw their schools over... LoL

Too late, of course, for any players to transfer even if someone had roster room for them.
It's all about the student-athletes, though.
A new 30-day window opens immediately after a coach leaves I believe. Confirmed with Google AI, FWLIW. Do we have room to steal anyone?

Edit: looks like Indy already addressed this…
