What I’m hearing …

Disappear Paramount Network GIF by Yellowstone
Early names I’ve heard tossed around:
Otz
Oats
Jay Wright (WTF?)
Golden

It’ll be interesting to see who turns them down. I can’t imagine they’d keep it in the family again.

Name I’m hearing as I’ve been asking around …

Mark Byington …
Wow—if I were an NC fan, I’d be very disappointed. If that’s who they end up hiring, then there’s no way Illinois would be able to land someone like Oats or Golden if NC couldn’t get them. North Carolina has far more resources dedicated to basketball than we do.

Did Gerry McNamara just get the Syracuse job? Seems like something they would do.
That Syracuse job just seems like a nightmare right now. Cuse legend or not, resources don’t seem to be there and now you walk into a situation where the Anthony’s will be calling the shots. Sounds fun.

He can coach and that’s what they need.

I think there's no way Illinois would be able to land someone like Oats or Golden, period.

Has nothing to do with resources …

There are some Carolina people who don’t have a problem with Golden off court issues or Oats player conduct issues …

But there’s also quite a few that do … The old money wants someone squeaky clean …

Byington can also really coach … I’m not saying he’s in that elite upper tier right now …

But if he has UNC resources ? I think he’d win … A LOT …

Hes a cool dude iike him a lot but I'd be livid if we hired him and UNC is an undisputed top 3 job. I have been told Oats wants out of bama theres no way you pick Byington over oats

Why is Speedy Claxton not considered for more high profile jobs? Just content at his alma mater?
1 year into the NCAA tournament doesn't automatically qualify him for a high major job. I'd take a guess that he needs more runs to the tournament to be considered. If he went on a Shaheen Halloway type of run, well then that's another story

Yeah, not sure who Wiscy would get that would be a slam dunk improvement over what Gard has achieved
I agree. I think Gard has actually done well taking over for Bo Ryan. The tournament runs aren't there but I do think he has made Wisconsin a more "sexy" program to go to. AJ Storr, John Blackwell, Nick Boyd in recent years would not have been the types of guys to come to Wisconsin. Their offense is more player friendly and they can definitely attract more guys now that their system is changing with the times.

I think if they could go get a Mark Byington or Grant McCasland type, then yea, they should let Gard go. But if they cannot , then continue to stick with him for now

The only chance for someone in that tier is if they are not happy with their AD or resources and know it would be better working for Josh Whitman.

Even then, it’s still a long shot.

I’ve said this before, but if I were sitting in Josh Whitman’s chair Byington would be on my personal list of who I would call if I had to make a coaching change tomorrow. I think he has every chance to be a big time winner at a big program.

I figure that's why as well, likely at least needs to add another tourney appearance for optics. Think a smart AD should see beyond that though. Last year aside, he's exceeded expectations by a great deal every year. Believe he would do quite well in the Big East or even ACC.

John Blackwell was a 3-star rated in the 200s with no other P4 offers

Nick Boyd was a 13 ppg scorer at SDSU and before that played at FAU

Even AJ Storr was a fringe top 100 guy.

Those are similar to what they’ve always gotten…They are not elevating the caliber of guys being brought in. They’ve brought in nice pieces for their system; like most years.

The only time they’ve truly had the “ceiling” type talent is when they developed kaminsky (also overlooked guy) in to a NPOY and paired him with Dekker, a top 20 guy…and that was a decade ago under Bo. Just like Illinois post 2005, they were unable to translate those 2 seasons into a higher level of consistent high-end talent.

I don’t think Gard should be let go either, but I’d say at this point there’s nothing to suggest they have another level to get to as a program without doing things different. They get solid guys, coach them up, and most years that translates to a top 25 team without real upside. They may get lucky a year where the bracket opens up or they hit a bunch of shots.
