The fact that the absolute #1 fans dream candidate for any big open CBB job is someone who has never had a job in major conference college basketball, last coached a college game in 2013 before the invention of the terms "NIL" or "transfer portal", and was openly contemptuous and uninterested in the player recruiting even of his own time is so revealing of the mentality of these things, and just human psychology in general really.

It is all, solely, 100% about what's most exclusive, most difficult to get, and thus what that reflects about how elite and exclusive your school, and thus you, are. What's the velvet rope that nobody else can get through?

Human weakness for that kind of thinking is a big reason these big hires so often wind up being disasters.

But never fear, the University of North Carolina would never ignore fit and suitability problems to hitch their wagon to an out-of-touch big name from the professional ranks

I think Byington's style of play would please that fanbase more, but McCollum might end up being more successful if he were to get the UNC gig, depending on how well he can recruit. That said, Byington is a REALLY good coach. McCollum might be extraordinary.

Agree …

Think if Josh was in search mode right now … Those 2 would be at the top of his list … Winners …

Plus - all the UNC fans wanting Golden or Oats … There’s some baggage there … The old money at UNC wants ZERO part of it …

I think Providence has a chance to be a really good job. It’s a better job than Syracuse imo. That place can get rockin’ too. There are worse places to land.
Decades ago, I lived in Syracuse (for an eternal Winter, even by old school Chicago standards). I also owned property in Providence. Providence is GREAT...

Visited Syracuse for a college tour a couple years ago. It felt like a town that peaked in 1960; dreary, dated, run down. Micron is building a billion dollar factory outside of town so maybe it will reverse course.

Kansas State search is a mess but it won’t be Schertz … I think it’ll likely be Casey Alexander …

Hodgson will have his pick of a handful of places … Syracuse makes a lot of sense if they can get everything in alignment for him …

The Randy Bennett rumors make no sense to me … Think he stays put …

Calhoun to Cincy makes too much sense …

If Braeuer is able to take a better job … Don’t rule out Tyler at SFA …

I've been totally mystified by the McCollum chatter today, but then I realized, everyone is analogizing him to Curt Cignetti aren't they?

That's really stupid!

It’s fools gold!!

Except that it’s actually gold.

McCollum seems like a good coach, but this is kinda hilarious. UNC would never have hired him based on one season at Drake right? So he must be getting hired off the back of his work at Iowa? Which consists of one good, not great, year and securing a 9-seed as either the 8th or 9th best Big Ten team?

In reality, the result of exactly one game, a victory in a one-game series against Florida, has him now being considered for the UNC job?! It's insane. Here's how insane it is: Steven Pearl has the same credential. He also beat Florida in a one-game series this year. His is actually better because he did it @Florida. Only difference is January v. March, but honestly, it's still fundamentally the same game.

Every year Athletic Departments make mistakes putting too much stock on the result of one or two games in March. It's wild to see sometimes. It'd be one thing if McCollum had done this after showing some fight in the conference, but that's not what happened. His record vs. the top half of the conference was 3-8 (incl. BTT) and he had losses to Maryland and Penn St. And that's with a 2nd Team All-Big player on his roster.

I am howling at the big reporters (e.g., Goodman) reporting that UNC isn't willing to stomach the tactics used by Oates while simultaneously reporting that UNC is very interested in Golden if he's willing to leave Gainesville
