Why would you leave places when you can easily get to the ultimate destination where you are at? Not saying he wouldn’t go, but I’m not sure he would get the same roster financial guarantee at UNC. Dont mess with happy.

Michigan has to step up on some things resource and program wise to keep May fully happy …

I think they will …

nothing like getting to the FF in your second year on the job (his 2nd in 3 years overall ) to get the attn of the people in charge .

I knew we were going to hate it when they fired Howard .

Byington will likely get a call as well …
As he should. Personally, between those two, I would take McCollum with all that NIL to assemble a team with. Without looking, my guess is Vanderbilt(SEC$) spends more on NIL and we have seen the results they have had when it comes to postseason. I don't like North Carolina at all, but would be ok with McCollum leaving the conference and only worrying about him in the NCAA tourney. He would be a problem with NIL backing. Of course, we have proved, as has Iowa, that it can be done without elite NIL backing so, what the He** do i know!!! lol.

I wonder how long she stays in the job at this point.
ugh
I’m all for giving people a chance at a “bigger” job when they’ve succeeded at a lower level.

But there simply are too many people getting promoted simply so someone can check a box on some HR form .

How about Dusty May? Guess that's not gonna happen?
May has an endless amount of NIL funds to have a blast with. They literally built a frontcourt with two players from within the conference and the top transfer on the market.

Michigan has just as big of a name as Arizona and has more money. The only way he leaves is if he's guaranteed the same amount of funds to spend AND the name on the front of the jersey is just too much to pass up. I'd think that UNC would fit that category? Outside of that, assuming Scheyer doesn't bail for the NBA....Kansas would be the only job he'd eyeball. I guess that's also subject to the assumption that he never wants to touch the NBA.

I’m a fan of McCollum but he should stay at Iowa. He’s becoming very popular there, and being an Iowan helps out. He should build Iowa up a few years before moving on.

My thoughts FWIW, UNC probably pivots to Byington, maybe Otz, Donovan as last resort?

I mean that's not "doing a Cignetti".

When people analogize Ben McCollum to Curt Cignetti, it's the idea that McCollum's instant success at a higher level means that he's just somehow decoded the game of basketball. Which sounds ridiculous when you say it, because that's not a real thing and is impossible, but what else can you say to describe what Cignetti has done?

And you're right that it's easier in basketball. Not as many individual things have to go right in order to get good in basketball, and it's fundamentally not as coach-driven.

But hey, if Northwestern fires Chris Collins, hires a mid-major flavor of the week, and using a lot of his own mid-major players and fringey NIL investment goes 3 seed Elite Eight year 1, 1 seed national title year 2, THAT would be "doing a Cignetti".

Perish the thought!
I'm not certain anyone is saying McCollum has decoded the game of basketball. But :

He is 36-9 in NCAA tournament games at all levels - what that portends is his ability to improve his teams over the season and prepare his teams better than most coaches for "win or go home" games.

It took him 7 years to turn NW Missouri State into a D II National title contender.

He is from Iowa City - He is in his dream job. He won't leave until he is convinced that Iowa will never have the resources to play at National Championship caliber.

One last thing to think about (and I dread the thought). Iowa is going to be better next year than the were last year.

I still have a feeling it’s gonna be Dusty May. Basketball is king at NC. The weather sure beats Ann Arbor. Not sure about buyout or anything like that. Maybe I’m just hoping Michigan falls back to mediocrity
It won't be May. I don't think it'll be McCollum, Oats, or Golden. I think it comes down to whether Carolina is convinced Donovan can dominate the college game again after being gone so long. If they're not convinced, I think Byington takes the job.

Given what I’ve heard about DRF, I’ll still subscribe to the “broken clock is right twice a day” theory.
I had never heard of her until like two days ago and have done zero research beyond reading the posts here, and yet I guarantee I could write 5000 words exactly reciting what the Arizona people's complaints are. Certain things never change.

Why no Otz?

I heard about him on some podcast. Apparently he is kind of a different guy. Doesn’t really enjoy the spotlight or high expectations. Grew up in a military family. Very regimented and not one for much nonsense. Just passing along what I heard.

Your opinion is based on what that Iowa will be better next year. Iowa was 12-10 in their last 22 games. Iowa made the most of their breaks against Florida and Nebraska. McCollom has to prove that he can recruit at McCaffrey level. The last time Iowa made the Elite prior to this year was 1987. That was 39 years ago. If he can keep Iowa a consistent NCAA TOURNAMENT team then he will parlay that into a bigger job.
