This tells me three things:

- Every other option was a no.
- They couldn't wait a week for Billy Donovan
- The front office is desperate.
Portal's open - they're already late to the party

I am increasingly hearing that Billy Donovan is trying to stage a coup against the Bulls front office and gain player personnel power for himself?

I’d argue that we are … In today’s landscape …

We certainly have better resources, better facility …

Salary is a wash …

And hey Michael Jordan reps our gear as well … 😎
We also have Josh Whitman and they don’t and that matters big time

I mean, props to him, but still....this is basketball coach career crazytime.
I can think of an explanation. A major job is becoming available next year one state over. If he wins this year at Iowa, he is very likely their first choice. That job might be significantly more desirable to him.

Didn’t see that one coming. Donovan must have told them No. I guess there may not be too much movement in coaching. The only big name could see leaving would be Few and Lloyd replacing him.
Billy D supposedly said he couldn’t leave the Bulls until the season ended , which is a defacto ,” thanks , but no “

He should've been fired for real re-signing Donovan. Appreciate Wilbon's honesty.

I'm surprised but certainly not shocked by the Malone hire, particularly if they found themselves wanting a quick off ramp from the coaching search with the portal window opening (which seems to be the case).

With extra time on his hands post Nuggets, he has spent a fair bit of time around Chapel Hill over the past season with his daughter starting school there, so he has likely been meeting/interacting with key decision-makers for months before Hubert was let go. E.g., in this podcast from last October, he mentions he had been at the last six UNC practices. I didn't really know anything about him when I first watched this last fall, but it did pique my interest to learn more.

Don't have any idea whether or not it will work out (will obviously need great support), but don't think the analogies to the 70 something Belichick hire really fit (other than as a punch line) and won't be surprised if he proves to be an upgrade over Hubert.
