Pretty crazy that Ryan Day played QB at New Hampshire with Chip Kelly as his OC years before anybody knew who Chip Kelly was.

Mike Bellotti feeling that his program had gotten a little stale and plucking a coordinator with zany ideas from a 1AA school the other side of the continent to change the way they play was really a watershed moment in the history of the sport.

The second week was them traveling to the Big House to take on a Michigan team reeling from the previous week's Appalachian State disaster, in what would prove to be Lloyd Carr's final season. Oregon 39 Michigan 7. Goodbye past, hello future.

Their athletic department is a dumpster fire. And the AD is a hot mess as well.
The UIUC administration is not very supportive of athletics; UCLA's administration is way worse. Some would say adversarial. Couple that with two mediocre athletic directors (I'm being charitable) spanning over 20 years, with the current one not having success in developing NIL resources, a huge financial deficit . . . and there you go.

The current AD is in over his head; the right AD could turn things around. The facilities are decent enough, the donor base is there but not sufficiently engaged/activated, recruiting advantages are built in, and the tradition is there. UCLA Football and Basketball have been, and should be, a lot better than they are right now. But the highest levels of the admin need to decide if they want to hire a great AD and empower him; I have my doubts that will happen.

Justin Wilcox would be an interesting hire. He's a much better coach than most realize. Give him a decent OC and he just might make UCLA relevant again.

I also don’t think PJ would view this as a step up. Minnesota is in better shape and he has the whole state behind him. LA. is not a college town.
The draw could be LA vs St.Paul & the opportunity of CA vs the limits of MN.

That said, I'd take MN.

How much of McDonald's success, or any WR coach for that matter, a function of how good your offensive co-ordinator is?
It's a vital component. Coach BLJ is proving to be a competent if not exceptional offensive coordinator. The fact that Coach Stepp and Coach BLJ have worked together before and been successful should make the transition more well ordered and elevate the performance of the receivers within our offense. I'm very optimistic that this will prove to be a solid hire.

Was disappointed to read this. Could you elaborate?

The argument Rittenberg made for Fleck is that he'd have a higher long-term ceiling at UCLA than he would at Minnesota.
Presumably based on SoCal talent?

UCLA football has the same conundrum IL basketball had for years. Being located near a major talent center and not getting that talent become a vicious cycle.

Kelly is the only UCLA coach in memory who has had trouble recruiting locally. Every other coach back to Donohue consistently pulled in Top 20 classes, sometimes getting into top 10. Kelly’s poor HS recruiting is really inexcusable.

Rittenberg's candidates to replace Chip Kelly:

External Options
-P.J. Fleck
-Brian Hartline
-Ryan Grubb, Alabama OC
-Justin Wilcox, Cal head coach
-Barry Odom, UNLV head coach
-Dave Aranda, Baylor head coach
-Tony White, Nebraska DC
I am to a quick look at the candidates just focusing on the external candidates on this. Forget about a Hail Mary hire, the way this played out for UCLA they will need to get 60 yards on a Statue of Liberty play.

Brian Hartline- this is the only move that will seems like a 60 yard Statue of Liberty play to me

PJ Fleck- Really?!? Don't make me laugh.

Grubb- had to internet search him, he has already moved on to become the Seahawks OC. I would wait if I was him.
Wilcox- Seems unusually loyal to Cal. In previous years his teams would have fit well into the "Big Ten West" meme but I think he picked some offensive that run more Big XII style offenses in the 2022-3 offseason (kicking and screaming btw). Doesn't win a ton, but Cal is a really difficult place to win lately.

Barry Odom- His Mizzou record is very meh, but winning 9 games at UNLV is nothing to sneeze at.

Aranda- This might be the most Big Ten West HC outside the B1G. Defensive savant but his team has some iffy offenses in an neighborhood where there are some explosive offenses. Also Baylor sources say that he is not good with NIL (and that alumni base would happily put money in the NIL kitty). Baylor fans love the man, but ar lukewarm at best about the coach.

White- Is it too early to hire a Nebraska assistant to a big job?

Disagree Gritty.
it was real for quite a while (and still is) , and in the spectrum of things , we are still way closer to the side where the academics really in charge do not respect what successful athletics can do for a school , vs the schools that dully embrace it

it all started after the slush fund scandal. schools like Michigan & Ohio St and Wisc never had to deal with this
