I read that one article - I had no idea things were that effed up out there .Their athletic department is a dumpster fire. And the AD is a hot mess as well.

The UIUC administration is not very supportive of athletics; UCLA's administration is way worse. Some would say adversarial. Couple that with two mediocre athletic directors (I'm being charitable) spanning over 20 years, with the current one not having success in developing NIL resources, a huge financial deficit . . . and there you go.Their athletic department is a dumpster fire. And the AD is a hot mess as well.
Still have to fill the OLB spotHave we filled all our open coaching positions? I can’t remember how many we had available.
The draw could be LA vs St.Paul & the opportunity of CA vs the limits of MN.I also don’t think PJ would view this as a step up. Minnesota is in better shape and he has the whole state behind him. LA. is not a college town.
Very instructive. Great coaches want to work for quality ADs. Our advantage.Their athletic department is a dumpster fire. And the AD is a hot mess as well.
It's a vital component. Coach BLJ is proving to be a competent if not exceptional offensive coordinator. The fact that Coach Stepp and Coach BLJ have worked together before and been successful should make the transition more well ordered and elevate the performance of the receivers within our offense. I'm very optimistic that this will prove to be a solid hire. How much of McDonald's success, or any WR coach for that matter, a function of how good your offensive co-ordinator is?
Was disappointed to read this. Could you elaborate? The UIUC administration is not very supportive of athletics; UCLA's administration is way worse. Some would say adversarial. The current AD is in over his head; the right AD could turn things around. The facilities are decent enough, the donor base is there but not sufficiently engaged/activated, recruiting advantages are built in, and the tradition is there. UCLA Football and Basketball have been, and should be, a lot better than they are right now. But the highest levels of the admin need to decide if they want to hire a great AD and empower him; I have my doubts that will happen.
wow... You would take frozen lakes over hot chicks in sting bikini's ? ? ? WOW... LOL..... Just had to laugh at that one...The draw could be LA vs St.Paul & the opportunity of CA vs the limits of MN.
That said, I'd take MN.

Presumably based on SoCal talent? The argument Rittenberg made for Fleck is that he'd have a higher long-term ceiling at UCLA than he would at Minnesota.
Kelly is the only UCLA coach in memory who has had trouble recruiting locally. Every other coach back to Donohue consistently pulled in Top 20 classes, sometimes getting into top 10. Kelly’s poor HS recruiting is really inexcusable.Presumably based on SoCal talent?
UCLA football has the same conundrum IL basketball had for years. Being located near a major talent center and not getting that talent become a vicious cycle.
It was never more than marginally true and it's less true today than it's ever been. Was disappointed to read this. Could you elaborate?
I am to a quick look at the candidates just focusing on the external candidates on this. Forget about a Hail Mary hire, the way this played out for UCLA they will need to get 60 yards on a Statue of Liberty play.Rittenberg's candidates to replace Chip Kelly:
External Options
-P.J. Fleck
-Brian Hartline
-Ryan Grubb, Alabama OC
-Justin Wilcox, Cal head coach
-Barry Odom, UNLV head coach
-Dave Aranda, Baylor head coach
-Tony White, Nebraska DC
Disagree Gritty. It was never more than marginally true and it's less true today than it's ever been.
The notion of athletics-hating UI leadership was just Guentherite propaganda.
it was real for quite a while (and still is) , and in the spectrum of things , we are still way closer to the side where the academics really in charge do not respect what successful athletics can do for a school , vs the schools that dully embrace itDisagree Gritty.
My partner who is a former chair of the board of trustees disagrees. It was never more than marginally true and it's less true today than it's ever been.
