One draw for a coach will always be the chance to win a national title. It's pretty limited at Illinois, certainly for the next five years. I think the blue blood programs where a guy could go and perhaps accomplish that in 5 years are not going to be looking at BB. They'll want something shinier. The one caveat is that perhaps we'll see more situations like in Kentucky basketball where a blue blood just can't entice a top flight "shiny" coach. BB is next level down and maybe has a shot. I don't think that is likely.

The other factor of course is NIL money. He can obviously survive right now at our spot in the pecking order. But if we slip down the list and he can't be competitive for recruits, he'll obviously be open to moving to a school that has a better NIL funding program.

Big 10 Head Coach Salaries 2024. Bret was 7th. These are base salaries only.

$10.3M R. Day
$ 8.5M J. Franklin
$ 7.6M L. Fickell
$ 7.5M J. Fisch
$ 7.4M K. Ferentz
$ 6.6M D. Lanning
$ 6.5M B. Bielema
$ 6.0M J. Smith
$ 6.0M P. Fleck
$ 6.0M S. Moore
And then the others.......

I don't believe the private schools were reported. Whitman will ensure we're always taking care of BB. Back-to-back Top 5 conference finishes, and we may need to ensure he's paid like a Top 5 coach.

For those living in/around Champaign County, how does $6.5M per year play? Able to buy groceries and go on one nice vacation every year?
You can probably get by on that okay around C-U. Live in a decent 'hood, be able to hit up some of the nicer restaurants and drinking establishments a few times a week if you're so inclined.

If Bielema is the coach many of believe that he is, there will be rumors swirling around various vacancies every off season. Unfortunately that’s one of the prices of success.

But to become a TRUE legend, you need to do two things:

(1) Win
(2) Stay

If you only do the first thing, you’re Lou Holtz at best, and Urban Meyer at worst.

Nobody has pulled off doing only the second thing since the 1950s.

I’ll be watching this thread as I always do but let’s trust that Bielema is already on the path to true legend status.

Can I sign up for the "worst" and take the title? I am very happy with Bret, but Urban is a step up in my world. Seriously though, I will keep Bret.

Not that I expect there to be pressure to do this based on a possibility of Bielema leaving for anywhere else, but are there any current discussions about a contract extension / raise? He certainly has earned a nice little raise after this season.

JMO- Brett is well compensated. We are coming off great season where we were 5-1 in one score games.

The bar has been moved with 12 team CFP. That is is the gold standard for top 20 coaches. The other bowl games are nice but don't mean anything any more.

I don't think Brett has the Illini there yet but we are pounding on the door. If Brett can get us to CFP then he deserves to be paid like Ryan Day and James Franklin.

Don't forget we lost at home to Minnesota and barely beat Purdue (worst team in B10) and Rutgers (7-6).

Our defense needs to improve a lot to be top 15. Hopefully we have replacement for Pat Bryant already on roster or coming in via portal.

It’s not always giving a raise based on CFP, results, etc. if you like what you got and are succeeding(we are) you give him a raise to keep other schools from sniffing around. We got 2 very good options in the portal and have Elzy

I just don’t see it. Bielema would be a “leader of men” type of hire, and I don’t see a NFL team looking at him and saying “that’s my guy”. I also don’t see any way he wants to return to the SEC.

I’ll never say never, but I’d be extremely surprised if either happens.
There is one draw to the SEC...showing Shane who is Daddy every year..

and the fans who made the trek.
Spot on. This game meant something....for both Illinois and South Carolina. Players, Coaches and Fans. I was there....incredible atmosphere. I get that like so many things in life, its all relative and open to perspective. But for the Illinois Fighting Illini football program and us long-suffering fans, trust me...it meant something.

Someone forgot to tell the guy on the left that bowl games don't mean anything . . . :ROFLMAO:

Based on the info that @DeonThomas posted a page ago, I think we're looking at $7.7-8.0 M/year, right? Or am I way off base?

It'll be right at 8 million from what I understand ... Plus money for 2 vehicles ... Plus incentives ...

He'll be very well compensated... This is a legacy job for Bret ... He wants to be here ... Plus Jen is happy, the girls are happy and I don't expect him to even think about going anywhere unless Josh leaves honestly ...

I genuinely want to join the Mafia and personally prevent this from ever happening.

Fortunately, unless it's just a bonkers offer I don't really see it happening. If Josh Whitman gave up a pretty lucrative law career to start his AD career at a Division 3 school (which I'm sure was an eye-watering cut in compensation), I think he's doing exactly what he wants to do with his life.

And he's the AD Ron Guenther wanted to be and wishes he would have been . . .

Maybe he'd want to be commissioner

i am in my mid 60's, was at the Michigan game where we won the Big ten in "83 and I'll never forget
the citrus bowl of 2024. the arrogance of the SEC, the 10 pt. dogs, the pimping of Shane Beamer. An
all timer, at last until we make the next step forward. But even then, we will look back at new years eve
2024 as the day we turned it around.

pay the man his money.

imo, not that JW couldnt do it, but the new "commish" if there ever is one, is not going to be a guy with strong SEC nor B1G ties. you need an impartial person.
Maybe an ivy leaguer or similar
