Extremely weird thing going on here where Illinois fans - who have for literally decades sung from the hymnal of "we just need to find our Barry Alvarez, it absolutely makes sense that someone would stay here and build something of their own because they would be revered and have minimal pressure" - are now discarding that entire theory because Indiana might have a guy doing it.

I almost brought up the parallels about if Ferentz announced he was retiring after the season and folks were connecting Bielema with the Iowa job, but decided the contract provision would likely be brought up to deflect the perspective.

Lol….You are correct, I have no “substantive response” to new arguments that you create in every post.

I simply came in to make fun of Indinia and compare that job to PSU for Cignetti.

If Nebraska gets dog-walked when they play @PSU this year - I would think that would put a damper on the Matt Rhule talk. I expect Penn State to have a UCLA like turnaround now - it just lights a fire under the team and they are too talented not to play better.

Cignetti would take the Penn State job in a heart beat - the facilities, the support for the football program, consistent top recruiting classes - there is no reason for him not to leave. He's too much of an egotistically maniac not to want to get the biggest head coaching job he can and his stock will never be higher than it is right now. He's obviously a terrific coach and has his team executing at a very high level, but he's also caught lightening in a bottle twice with transfer QB's playing out of their minds. His luck may run out on that and then his shine will fade if he can't keep up this level of success while mostly relying on one year transfers, he's likely not an NFL guy, so getting one of the blue blood college jobs really is his ceiling and I wouldn't blame him for taking it.

It’s a funny thing with this coaching change. I’m not thrilled with the prospect of Cignetti going to PSU, but I sure would love to see him leave IU because of their fans. Truth is PSU will always be decent and having IU as a power makes the Big Ten clearly better. Conflicted. lol

I'd much rather have him at PSU than build another Alabama at Indiana.

A name I’m hearing for Penn State … I’m a little surprised but the interest is legit on both sides is the word …

Kliff Kingsbury …

Personally I think he’s just throwing his name at every HC job … Just to wind up with the Titans … But that’s just me …
Call me crazy but I actually think this would be a good hire for them.

They get horrendous production out of their receivers under Franklin/Allar. If you keep Knowles or pair Kliff with a big boy DC I think that would actually work.

you can’t run that offense in the big 10 , most years , 10/15 - 11/30

Ohhh fun. I can play that game too.

As a CFB program, It's a barn find Ferrari that will take years of restoration.

As it currently sits...it is a modified 71 Mercury station wagon that is winning a drag race.

I think the more apt comparison is the Indiana is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Dead and rusting for years before an unheralded genius turns it into a sleek and shiny family motor car.

But wait… it floats on water? Didn’t see THAT coming. But oh well… that’s not all that impressive.

Oh crap! It FLIES too? How is that even possible? It’s was a rusty old hunk of junk not too long ago?

At the end, the rest of us can only hope that, like Chitty, it was all just a fantasmagorical story.

Does a Kliff Kingsbury style team match up well with Penn State? Maybe I'm ignorant, but it feels like one of those culture/style changes that won't work (Michigan-Rich Rod, Wisconsin-Fickle).
Somewhat skeptical of how an "air raid" type of offense (Kliff is a Leach disciple) would work in the northeast. At least 1 or 2 home games each year is going to be played in windy/cold/snowy weather that is not necessarily conducive to a passing attack. Not to mention every game after about October 15 in conference (save USC & UCLA) could be played in similar miserable weather.

Of course everyone throws more these days than in the days of old but the only original BIG school to really have consistent success over a # of years with an air raid type of attack was Tiller at Purdue. And the high level success they had centered around Drew Brees. I think that guy would've won games in any kind of offense. He was that good.

Mike White chucked it around in the early 80's, but nowhere near like the air raid type of attack.

He's an Air Raid disciple but the offense he is currently running is versatile. Most modern football offenses are like this - a collection of the most effective concepts that came before them.

Not a ton of teams running vintage Leach/Mumme style Air Raid that can fit almost on a single page.

Yes - I'm sure his NFL time has forced him to think more versatile. A true air raid would be hard to pull of there due to the weather at times as well as the culture. Also, you need a real gunslinger type to pull it off.

He's definitely had to increase the complexity since his days at Arizona. They would constantly be fading in second halves. Needs a really good DC.

1. I will say that a program hiring Kliff Kingsbury might work with the current GM model of CFB. Let him do the offensive stuff and let the GM get the defensive players. I can see him doing well at Oklahoma if they dump Venables (not advocating it though).

2, We seen what a good Air Raid offense might look like in the Big Ten, we saw it at Homecoming with USC.

3. Wisconsin's version failed because it was an entire program 180, especially from the philosophy that worked for a long time. See Nebraska under Callahan.

4. Apparently in 2004, Illinois wanted Mike Leach himself.

Cignetti is a guy with a chip on his shoulder who likes a challenge. He has already done something at IU that nobody thought was possible. The challenge there is to maintain the program at a high level. It's possible he can do that, but it's also possible that he caught lightning in a bottle and he never gets back to having a playoff caliber team

Or is he ready to move on to the next challenge?

Valid point, I think Cignetti is such an anomaly in the sense that he kinda just arrived and put together a heavyweight contender overnight. It's almost like the whole "building" part was skipped. That's a testament to NIL, landing key targets in the portal and coaching. I think because this all happened SO fast for IU, the natural tendency is to assume he's simply bigger and better than IU and belongs elsewhere.
