Somewhat skeptical of how an "air raid" type of offense (Kliff is a Leach disciple) would work in the northeast. At least 1 or 2 home games each year is going to be played in windy/cold/snowy weather that is not necessarily conducive to a passing attack. Not to mention every game after about October 15 in conference (save USC & UCLA) could be played in similar miserable weather.

Of course everyone throws more these days than in the days of old but the only original BIG school to really have consistent success over a # of years with an air raid type of attack was Tiller at Purdue. And the high level success they had centered around Drew Brees. I think that guy would've won games in any kind of offense. He was that good.

Mike White chucked it around in the early 80's, but nowhere near like the air raid type of attack.
White was a Bill Walsh / West Coast Offense implementer. Different philosophy for the passing game than the Air Raid / Fun n Gun / Run n Shoot / June Jones / Mouse Davis offenses.

Yes - the Walsh stuff started coming in during the early 80's as he had high level success with the 49'ers. I do remember White's team at Illinois seeming "revolutionary" at the time in the old 3 yards and a cloud of dust philosophy. No one had really tried to take on the big 2 of OSU & Michigan by such dynamic means prior to then.

Air raid first came to real prominence was University of Houston being good with it in the late 80's/early 90's. Andre Ware & David Klingler. Also, around same time the Houston Oilers were using it in the NFL with Warren Moon at the helm.

That late 80's/early 90's period was really transformational for football as teams were starting to pass a lot more. Also, teams like the Bills & Bengals were having high level success with variations of pass heavy offenses as well as starting to really use the no huddle concept as an all the time strategy. Not just something used in the last 2 minutes of the half or when down in the 4th quarter. The game really advanced into the modern era offensively.

In the matter of just a few years we went from Oklahoma & Nebraska dominating for many years throwing the ball fewer than 10 times (sometimes fewer than 5) a game to teams chucking it 50/60 times a game with regularity.

Cignetti makes $11 mil a year and would owe Indiana $15 mil if he leaves. Another team would need to pay that $15 mil, and give him an 8/130 mil (16 mil a year) to get him to walk.

Georgia pays Kirby Smart $13 mil a year. So I think if another team wants to make Cigs the highest paid coach in college football, the $15 mil exit fee for leaving Indiana isn’t gonna stop them

If you are Penn State, you gotta make calls to Urban Meyer and Nick Saban. Age shouldn’t be an issue for PSU given how long they let Paterno be a figure head coach

I was hoping Cigs would leave, but I figured he'd stay at IU until the end. He gets paid a lot of money and gets to build his own legacy.

And I would be surprised if Kiffen left the south, but who knows with that guy.

I have to assume PSU had some feelers out before they fired Franklin. Just diving into this without any real interest from some big-time coaches would be such a dumb move. Maybe they end up with Jimbo Fisher or Brian Kelly; I wouldn't hate that.

It’s probably better for the B1G in general to have strong programs but at the same time it’s hard to see our doormats upgrading. Of course they all probably thought the same thing about us too lol.
It just shows the cursed nature of this program that while we finally seem like we’re building something sustainable, the one program that’s been even more of a doormat hits the lottery.

Y'all can crucify me if you want, but I was hoping Cignetti would stay at Indiana. Yes, I said it. I would love for IU-UI to become the new osu- scUM rivalry. Also, I wanted someone to turn the big names down and rub it in their faces. Sure he has lots of rea$on$ to stay, but perhaps this points to a new playing field regarding the top schools poaching coaches from others schools at will. To be honest, I begrudgingly kinda like the guy.
