How does Iowa do it on defense, year in and year out, without elite athleticism across the board? They have only had the Parkers as DCs for the last 30 years?

1. Superior coaching. Parker is one of the best DCs in the country. Ferentz is underrated.
2. Their defense recruiting is really good.
3. Almost every athlete (i.e., Nasir Rankin) they get is put on defense.
4. They run their "cover 8" a ton - similar to Lovie w/ Bears with Cover 2. You can become so disciplined running the same thing over and over again.
5. They can run that same defensive style every time if you can create pressure and stop the run with your defensive line.

Their defensive talent should not be ignored. Illinois has had 14 NFL draft picks since 2020. Iowa has had 13 defensive players drafted in the NFL since 2020.

Obviously, those 14 thus far were all Lovie recruits. Bret certainly had a role in developing and placing those guys in the right roles i.e. Kerby Joseph.

It will be very interesting in 4-5 years to see if we can match or exceed the 14 draftees. It's very likely we don't see another top 10 pick like Spoon. But can we send 3 to 5 guys to the draft every year? We shall see

Could we get the def coordinator from Ia if BB pulls the plug on Henry?
Why should we hire a Parker? We had a Parker. His father was a defensive coach at Illinois under Moeller. We fired him, go figure. He recycled back to Iowa and became the DC and a great one.

I doubt if the kid is interested in a job at Illinois after we axed his father.

I understand the fear but disagree. 2023 was his first year. BB wasn't going to can his DC after the first year, especially someone so deeply connected to him. Last year, we really only had one loss due to the defense (Oregon). Otherwise it was a fairly anemic offense against PSU and Minnesota, and the defense got us that win against South Carolina. With this being year three, I see BB demoting Henry back to position coach and finding someone else. He has the connections, we have the money, and we have had a great deal more success than we would have had looking after the 2022 season. This is a stable place that a good coordinator can be at for some time. See: Barry Lunney.
This is what I am thinking , but the announcement will be Co-DC's with Henry & a new hire DC sharing the title ( in name only to protect Henry's reputation).......JMHO........kids are involved and BB , having 2 daughters also , will not shove AH to the curb......

he really really won't................

Succinctly put.

There definitely aren't enough great coaches to go around for the teams with NC aspirations. That's a very expensive game of musical chairs where some programs can't afford to get out of their hires. I thought it was interesting that LSU was reportedly still negotiating his separation. Wonder if he'll go quietly or stick to his contract.
In his shoes I would simply be saying "show me the money!". It's the last time he'll be in the driver's set in this relationship. I don't know what he's got in terms of a mitigation clause in his contract, but I can think of 50,000,000+ reasons for saying "bye" and sitting on my a$$ playing golf and fishing for the next 20+ years.

It’s not like Iowa has a bunch of top 10 recruiting classes. They have elite coaches who get the most out of their players.

No argument on the coaching staff.

My point is the the top 8-10 recruits every year for them are defense, offensive line, and TE. Iowa's recruiting classes usually have 3-6 4+ star players every year. If you have 20 4-stars on your team but 15 of them are on defense, I view it as a misnomer to assume the coaching staff is making NFL players from middle-of-the-pack HS talent.

Counterpoint: Norm Parker was not Phil Parker's dad.

4-USC is top 10 as well.

You can fairly make that assertion when it comes to PPG, Stop rate, yards, etc being skewed high. Some of those statistic based rankings have us 90th to 100+ and last in the B1G.

However, Defensive FPI still has us at #66. That is because it is weighted for who you play ....so the harsh reality is....we are below average.
They’ve all played Illinois, so that could help them with the overall great offensive production.

Boat raced at IU, but OSU was very winnable and against Number 1.

Washington was chaotic, but turned largely on Kreutz failing to take an easy interception home to put us ahead at the half. Failing to grab that dropped punt cost us 3-7 points. It was a winnable fight, certainly not boat raced.
Every loose ball v Duke we grabbed. Nothing went our way in Seattle.

Crazier things have happened

1. Lincoln Riley jumps from hot seat at USC to one of open jobs -
2. Brent Venables jumps from OK to get out of SEC to - Clemson ACC or Penn State B10
3. James Franklin in a fit of insanity accepts the FL job
4. Brian Kelly takes Penn State job to get out of SEC

It boggles my mind why anybody would take Brian Kelly, but someone probably will.

If USC loses to Nebraska, I could see Lincoln Riley putting some feelers out there and gauging interest.

Don't know how much good will he'll have left in SoCal if they fall to say 8-4/7-5 on the year which could be very possible if they don't win on the road this weekend.

@Nebraska
Northwestern
Iowa
@Oregon
UCLA

There is a legitimate chance USC loses 3 of its last 5 games.

Though I think they go 3-2 with losses at Oregon and one of Iowa or UCLA clip them at home. (I have no faith in a Matt Rhule team to beat them this weekend)

Hard to argue his on the field results, Guy is a total clown and world class A hole, but he can win. LSU was just a terrible fit culture wise and even then, his results weren't as bad as it seems. They juts have unreal expectations there. I personally think that BK at a place like VA Tech, OK State,Stanford, Wisconsin , UCLA etc.. could cook. Now Penn State hiring him would be comical given that their expectations are similar to LSU

I would be shocked to see his next spot be outside of the Midwest and would not want to see him at Wiscy.

Just have to wonder if he has the fire for that sort of rebuild.

How possible is it that Illinois is the final game coached for each of the last two Wisconsin coaches?

I just hope they don't let him go before playing us.

I'll take an 64+ year old and a complete a-hole with less resources to play with at Wisconsin. Do it Wisconsin.
