On Fitz, as a coach, his last year was 2022. In the NIL era, that was lightyears ago at this point. I think the equally important hire will be MSU's GM/Personnel VP, and how collectively that whole group ups the activation Ishbia and crew.

Guys like Chesney scare me the most. He followed Curt Cignetti. He didn't build JMU. He's never been at a P4 conference. He's spent his whole career at tiny schools.

I'm sure he's a very good coach, but it's more than just coaching to run a big time program. He's going to have a heck of a lot of on the job learning. Also with so many tiny schools on his resume, I doubt his network for assistants is too deep with P4 experience. An awful lot of risk there.
I totally see where you’re coming from and respect your viewpoint. There’s just so much unknown when it comes to coaching moves, and it’s all over sports.

Who really thought Ben Johnson would have this Bears team where they are right now (and I thought the Bears made a very good hire when they hired him.)

A lot of people (and I’ll admit I was one of them) thought Brad Stevens would last 2-3 years with the Celtics and then come back to Duke or Indiana.

Meanwhile, I thought Archie Miller could lead Indiana to a Final Four and Lane Kiffin had a legitimate chance to win multiple national titles at USC.

As that noted philosopher Joaquin Andujar said about baseball, “You can sum it up in one word-yaneverknow.” :)

Have they contacted Tim Beckman? His coaching tree expanded by 1 limb.
I mean, Beckman does have good knowledge of the coffee shops in State College…..

(For the record, I was NOT a fan of his idea to camp at PSU looking to poach off the Sandusky scandal. Was pretty bush league in my opinion.)

My issues with Fitzgerald have more to do with the type of person he is than the hazing (although I would think moms would have a concern with that). My issue is his smarmy frat boy petty BS. Like using all 3 timeouts to try to ice a kicker before the half. Bush league bser. I would have been horrified if we hired him.

Agree, maybe he will hire Tim Beckman as an assistant. Seems to me the Northwestern scandal was way worse than the Illini scandal.

What is there to fear from Fitzgerald? I don’t really understand it. Did he do a good (great?) job at NW from a wins/losses standpoint? Yes. But he was no Cignetti. He will most likely make them solid but as for recruiting, Bret will always have the advantage. BB started pushing Fleck, Wisky and others out of Illinois and horseteeth won’t have any great advantage trying to draw Illinois kids to MSU. The real challenge for him is becoming competitive with scUM. That’s their measuring stick. Good luck.

I've been vocal against him. Part of that is I believe there's evidence supporting that Hankwitz was a major part of his success and people are too quick to ignore the almost last half decade of his Northwestern run (when Hankwitz retired).

Ignoring those opinions, this is a bad outcome for Illinois. Michigan State has been a willing recruiter in the Chicagoland era since Dantonio. Fitzgerald has to be one of the most plugged-in coaches in the Chicagoland in CFB. It makes all the sense for that pairing to double-down on Chicago and the State of Illinois being a large part of their recruiting strategy. Therefore, I'm expecting a lot more battles between Michigan State and Illinois for the foreseeable future.

The difference is we didn’t have Bret. Not saying they won’t be more competitive but we weren’t competitive then so very hard to judge. My money’s on Bret.

Kentucky done better than Arkansas, Ole Miss, and maybe Auburn. I would not be surprised Stein is better hire than Sumrall, who might be in a worse situation with Caldwell as a GM. Who would have thunk that OK St, UCLA, and Kentucky had the best hires in the carousel?!?

Agreed on that, and with his background in the west and Utah, I can’t see him wanting to go to Penn State - and BYU has some crazy deep pockets to keep him and support football.
I'm still thinking the most likely outcome of this is he gets a big fat extension from BYU. The guy is a BYU alum who has spent nearly his entire coaching career in the state of Utah and also happens to personally be a Mormon. If there was ever anyone who'd rather be at BYU than Penn St., I'd think he'd be that guy. That being, Penn St. seems to think he's serious, so who knows.

TIL. Stein was Lunney's pass game coordinator at UTSA (and Lunney's replacement at OC after Lunney left for Illinois).

Maybe don't fire the guy who went 104-45 over 12 years, including top 10 finishes five of the last six? At this point, regardless of who they hire - other than maybe Daboer - it will be a downgrade.

The thought likely was they'd be top of the carousel when making that move. But having no established candidate, and then LSU, FLA, and so many others coming open really bit em in the butt.

Or they thought Cignetti would be a layup 🤷‍♂️ ...

sometimes it’s all about

I am not sure Lunney gets a HC as I have not seen his name pop up anywhere. North Texas will look to a guy like Kinne or SMU’s Casey Woods. Arkansas would want an established HC so we will have him back next year if I am looking at things right. He wants to be a HC but will he take a big step down top do it? Would Texas State call if Kinne jumps ship? Would UTSA if Traylor leaves? Options are limited. I think we need to concentrate on getting a new OL coach and make massive changes on the defensive side of the ball.
