UMD is inside the beltway so it is basically DC and DC is a fast-paced rat race. I would think UMD basketball would mostly be secluded from that... but maybe the rest of his surroundings are bothering him
LoL...I lived there for 3 years...and they do drive fast and there is a lot of govt and lobbyist money around that creates activity....but our bureaucracy pace at agency level and in politics in DC is slow as a snails and mind numbing (just my opinion).

I think Turgeon is simply tired of living in a large urban area. If he leaves, I would expect him to go to a much smaller town , like Manhattan, KS or similar college dominated town. Maybe Weber is on his way out at KSU

Bloomington IN???
That would be an interesting hire. Probably better than any other rumor

Loved Lon. I’ll never forget emailing my girlfriend at the time (now wife of however many years). “Lon is GONE!” :( after I heard the rumor he was leaving.
I’ll always wonder what coulda been had he stayed. He just hired an ace recruiting assistant. Rumor was he was gonna get a top PG that went to Marquette and a great combo forward that played in the NBA after going to Florida. Also Roger Powell was a Lon recruit. I’m gonna have to look up those other names.

Replying to myself

Derrick Thomas was the coach iirc
Travis Deiner was the Pg
David Lee was the forward.

Could be that combined with Maryland fans riding him constantly and wishing that Gary Williams was still the coach.

Yep - that would have been one hell of a recruiting class. For a guy who was supposedly a weak recruiter, he brought in a lot of high level talent - Frankie, Arch, Awvee Storey, Cook, Powell, Diener and Lee all played in the league and were recruited by Kruger over a 4 year period.

My thoughts exactly. I've always liked and admired him. Just a solid, ethical coach. I believe he would have had sustained success in Champaign for many seasons. I mentioned that on here recently and another poster noted his recruiting deficiencies, of which I was unaware. Your details shed light on that.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Lon and wish him a wonderful retirement. That said, giving him credit for Diener and Lee is like giving Underwood credit for Boakye and Burnett.

I've always wondered where we would have ended up had Lon stayed long term. He is a proven high level coach multiple times over. Maybe not the highest of highs, but the program certainly would not have dipped as badly as it did post 2006. Always struck me as a real class guy.

This. Would not be surprised at all if he ends up in Norman. Have lived in DC for 18 of the past 25 years, and the past 13 during this stretch. MD basketball fans are impossible to satisfy. Turgeon inherited a bit of a mess (Gary Williams had a fine final season but the several leading up to that one were mediocre at best.) It took him four full seasons to make the Tourney. During the ten seasons he has been here, I've heard nothing but complaints from the fan base. Perhaps my fellow DC-area Loyalty posters can back that up.

I have a good friend who played for MD in the late '60s (was Gary W's teammate) and has been a booster for more than 50 yrs. He has been skeptical that Turge will stick around. The matter of a contract extension has been a big deal the past couple seasons. I watch them play regularly and believe he's a good coach. But MD fans for decades played second fiddle to UNC and Duke (and even UVa, GT, NC St, and Miami in certain years) in the ACC before joining the BT. They have an inferiority complex that hasn't improved since joining our league. Won't be surprised to see him leave on his own.

EDIT: IMO he did a fantastic job with the team this year given what he lost after last season.

Not really. The difference is we will never know about Lon and those guys. The entire point was speculating about if he hadn’t left. I guess if Underwood leaves, and neither of those players hadn’t already committed elsewhere at the time, you’d have an analogy you could use.

He grew up in Toepka. So Norman might be a good fit.

Fine, a poor analogy, but I was simply pointing out the fact that he didn’t land those players. Why would we include them in a list of his recruiting wins?

I thought they had both verbaled prior to Lon leaving? Or maybe it was just the dreaded "silent verbal." I thought I read a Loren Tate column on this once
