And don't let your evening end (metaphorically) the way it did for Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction. She won the dance contest and matters rather went downhill from there.
Perhaps a win here will be the shot of adrenaline to wake the "sleeping" giant?

By that definition, we ended up with 15 years of Weber and Groce and are perennial bottom feeders. Stability can't only be measured by who's coaching.
Perennial bottom feeders? Are you kidding me? How far back in history do you go?

Ranked #6 --- ESPN/Sagarin All-time NCAA Basketball Programs
Ranked #17 - BleacherReport All-time NCAA Basketball Programs
Ranked #16 - Most victories all-time in NCAA basketball history (wins = 1,835)

Underwood and staff have just started the re-birth after a short Weber/Groce-led hiatus.

Did I say all-time? I qualified my statement with 15 years of Weber & Groce, which you agree with in your last sentence. Thanks for the stats, though.

Unfortunate situation..but as others have stated the longer this drags out the better I feel about retaining both.
I'm not sure this changes the math for anyone. The KU athletic Dept. is dealing with a personal tragedy. I imagine all parties will pull back to some degree until after this young man has been put to rest.

*NOT AN INSIDER CLAIM* - 0440, and other "Insiders" can confirm/tell if what I hear below is fact or fiction from what they are hearing as well.

However, my family has been a booster of the program ever since the mid-'80s. My father is an alumnus, and local Champaign business owner, whose other business partner and best friend is a former Illini Basketball player (w/NBA experience) from the '70s, and well connected to the Atkins, Kahn families. With that said, I can say for sure that since the early/mid part of this 2020 Basketball season. Whitman and Underwood have been given many assurances from more prominent boosters, alumni that they are willing to come to the table to help this program.

They believe in Underwood and BU's staff and do not want to see another Self situation arise. These same alumni still are pretty PISSED about what happened with Self and the optics around the whole thing. More specifically, Gunther not making more of a play "public" attempt/try to keep him, after the string of success we had with Kruger and then during Self's tenure (96-03). Even if everyone knew it was a very long shot. It was not a good look for the program in their eyes and potentially played a factor in getting another up-and-coming, high-level coach to replace Self.

With that all said, I think Whitman is showing he is not Gunther Lite, and the Alumnius are putting their money where their mouth is. We see this in the $1M for 4/year offer to OA. I am hearing Chin is due to get a substantial counter offer as well $700k range for 4/year. Lastly, it has recently been reported that the new Ubben ($40M) has picked up a substantial number of recent donations over the past few months - one for over $3M alone. Some recently announced - locally - but more to come out over the summer (trickle campaign) to continue the momentum and spotlight on the project.

Whitman gets it and is doing what a TRUE top-tier BigTen AD should be doing - stepping up and pulling strings where and when he has to. He is also showing Brad that he is not just a FB AD and truly has his back. Both in front of the cameras and behind them with the Administration, President of the University, Boards, and boosters.
Florida Gulf Coast University -- exquisitely stated!!!!

I don't believe it means that we'll necessarily come out on top, but this is great info! (Wondering which 1970's BB player you might be referencing....)

Where this situation with Coleman and Antigua goes will be interesting. Can Illinois really compete financially with UK and KU? Is there some other off the books compensation Illinois can’t match? Do Coleman and Antigua feel UK and KU will make a difference for their future opportunities?

What happened over at KU? Did $elf and Co. finally get sanctions? ;) /s

They will be able to "operate" very freely with protection from the FBI, so yes. lol

Still maintain if $$ is equal we are the more stable option. We will take a step back next year but our roster is in good shape and we should be in the tourney. Cal has one more down year and his seat starts to get very warm and I think he actually looks to leave before he gets fired. Doubt wherever he goes will have the kind of assistant pool we or UK are talking about.
Barring something crazy happening, it’s a virtual lock Coach O can stay here all 4 years.
Like others have mentioned, it's possible that KY is telling OA he will be Cal's replacement if/when Cal gets canned. Seems unlikely that will happen, but does sound like something (underhandedly?) that KY would tell OA.

I think the main "off the books" advantage is simply the visibility of those respective programs, and the level of talent you typically will be working with. You have to believe that both OA and Chin have aspirations of being a HC eventually. Citing examples of players you recruited and developed into NBA players gives you more sway with recruits and A.D.'s.

Even when KU stinks, they are getting multiple guys drafted in the 1st round.

Cal has had 12 assistants get HC jobs as a result of being on his staff. (Including OA, himself)

Bill Self has had 14

BU has had 1.

Obviously those guys have been HC for MUCH longer.

Would have to depend on if Cal told UK he is leaving at a specified time. If OA goes there and Cal has enough bad years to get fired wouldn't it stand to reason that OA didn't do his job well and wouldn't then be in line to take over?

#68
Not sure how confident I am that we win this battle. In terms of equal $, UK would be an easier gig for OA considering that it is easier to sell that program to NBA-caliber talent. Regardless, our program and Whitman look fantastic in the process. With Whitman at the helm, we will not be pushed around anymore.

Pretty comical that a $9M/year coach has to go to the AD and Trustees and argue he has to have a certain assistant to succeed. Especially during COVID with the impact it has had on university budgets.

In the end, we will be fine regardless of what happens. Players want to play for BU. He is the magic.

Yes, that's why I said "underhandedly"

That’s silly. They want OA so they get back to the level they want to be at which would mean Cal wouldn’t “get canned”. If they don’t get to a high level they would not promote OA

I guess maybe they could say Cal has 3-5 years til he retires and then OA is the coach.

Even if they said it, OA wouldn’t believe it. He has to decide between building something special or maintaining something special. Two great opportunities for him. I hope the relationship with Underwood and Whitman is the difference.
